Hello, I dropped my HP 15-f387wm laptop yesterday. The warranty is expired. When I boot it, the fans run and the screen turns on but it stays black. It doesn't work when connecting to a different monitor. I thought maybe it was a memory issue so I reseated the ram but that didn't do anything. I used Esc and F2 and was able to get to the hardware diagnostics so the screen works fine. It passed all the other tests but failed the Hard Drive DST Check. Here are the results:
Failure ID: 6C61VR-7T799V-MFPWLK-60WF03
Product ID: N5Y09UA#ABA
Hard Drive 1 - Primary HDD Bay
Obviously something is wrong with the hard drive. I was wondering what the code means and what actions I could take to fix it. Will I just have to buy a new hard drive? Or is that even necessary and could it potentially be caused by a weak connection/the hard drive is out of place somehow? If I do need to get a new hard drive, how do I go about getting the correct one with the correct OS and such on it? And is there anyway to recover/access any of the data on my current drive?
Thank you

Hi:
The exact meaning of the code is: Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure.
Buy a new 2.5" notebook hard drive and reinstall the operating system.
If you don't need a lot of storage space, you can get a decent 240 GB solid state drive for the cost of a 1 TB hard drive.
Here is the link to the service manual...The HDD R & R procedures can be found in chapter 6.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04763999
You can reinstall the OS for free as follows...
To reinstall W10...Use the Media Creation Tool. Make the 64 bit installation media.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
You can make a W10 USB flash drive installer using an 8 GB flash drive using another Windows PC, since your PC is not working.
W10 will work with the product key in the BIOS, install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.
Here are the steps to create the W10 USB flash drive installer...
- Select Download tool now, and select Run.
- If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.
- On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.
Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10. You want 64 bit.
- Select which media you want to use:
- USB flash drive. Plug in a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.
Then you can install the drivers and available software from the PC's support page.

As for the question of recovering any files- the best hope of recovering any will be to attach the drive to a usb adapter and plug it into usb port of another working machine or your laptop once you have it up and running again. If their isn't too much damage you should be able to browse the drive for User folder and copy the files over to drive of host machine.
Example:

Also, there is nothing to lose by checking to be sure the drive still has a secure connection before replaing it. If the laptop was powered on during the drop it most likely was damaged. If it wasn't powered on there is a "chance" it was shaken and lost secure connection.
