HP Envy B5Y66AV
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello. I have a HP Envy dv6z-7200 CTO Notebook PC. A few days ago while using it I kept getting a message to save a backup and restart the computer. It was in the middle of a backup when it shut off unprompted. I went to turn it back on and the black screen that tells you to check systems or go directly to startup. I ran the hard disk smart check and it failed. Now the computer wont stay on for longer than 5 minutes and wont let me startup. What I need to know is how do I fix this problem and if it cant be how do I recover all the information from the hard drive? Thank you to whoever answers.

When a hdd fails the only option is to replace it with a new one. A retail drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of equal or larger capacity in order to use HP Recovery Media to install Windows.

Maintenance and Service Guide is here:

As for recovering your files, probably the best hope will be using a USB HDD Adapter. Remove the drive attach it to the adapter and plug into usb port of another working machine or your laptop after you get it running again. If there is any life left in the drive you should be able to browse it and copy your files, photos, documents over to drive of host machine.

Hi,

To try to recover files from the drive, you should remove the drive and connect externally with a USB to SATA adapter, then try to recover the files on different PC.

Example:

https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-Adapter-Optimized-EC-SSHD/dp/B011M8YACM/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=...

On page 52 of the service manual, you can see how to remove the drive

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03591281

When you connect to another computer and open the User Folder on the drive, it can take some time as every file will need to change security setting, so, it might take a couple of minutes to open the folder.

You will need to replace the drive in the notebook and reinstall the OS.

You can use a 2.5" SATA3 HDD of your preferred brand or you could opt for a 2.5" SATA3 SSD for performance gain.

Examples:

https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-BarraCuda-Internal-Drive-2-5-Inch/dp/B07H28QRKN/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=s...

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0786QNS9B/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=mx500&qid...

To reinstall the OS, you can use recovery disks or perform a clean install of Windows 8.1

You can create a bootable USB drive with the OS on it directly from Microsoft

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO

once installed let it completly update. You can then install HP support assistant for HP drivers and more

https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html

Hope it helps,

David
