I ran the HP Short Drive Self Test.  It failed, and gave me a Failure ID.  What do I do with that ID?  I'm at a dead-end, but it seems that my hard drive is failing?

Sadly to say: Most of the time the 24 char disk failure id indicates the HDD is failing and it needs to be replaced.. Is it still under warranty ? If NOT, you have to replace yourself then rebuild your machine.

The ID doesn't really get into any details as to what is wrong with the drive.

It just reports what you already know...Short Drive Self Test Failure.

You will need to install a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

You may want to consider replacing the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

Your PC is not supported by the HP cloud recovery tool.

After you replace the drive, use the Microsoft media creation tool to create a bootable W10 installation flash drive.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

After W10 has completed installing you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.
