Hi @abalduina,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're experiencing with your HP ENVY TouchSmart M7 Notebook PC, where it displays a black screen stating "fan not working properly" and then shuts off, is likely due to a hardware problem with the cooling system. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.
Clean the Fan and Vents:
- Power off the laptop and unplug it from any power source.
- Remove the battery (if it's removable).
- Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust from the fan and vents. Dust accumulation can cause the fan to malfunction.
- Be careful not to blow the dust further into the laptop; try to direct the airflow out of the vents.
Check for Obstructions:
- Ensure that the fan blades can spin freely and are not obstructed by debris or other objects.
Update the BIOS:
- Sometimes, updating the BIOS can resolve hardware compatibility issues.
- Visit the HP support website and look for the latest BIOS update for your specific laptop model.
- Follow the instructions provided by HP to update the BIOS. Ensure your laptop is connected to a reliable power source during the update process.
Run Hardware Diagnostics:
- HP laptops usually come with built-in diagnostic tools. To access these:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Press the power button and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to access the System Diagnostics menu.
- Run the System Tests, particularly the Component Tests for the fan and other hardware.
Check the Fan Connection:
- If you are comfortable opening your laptop, check the connection of the fan to the motherboard.
- Ensure that the fan's power connector is securely attached.
Replace the Fan:
- If the above steps do not resolve the issue, the fan itself may be defective and needs replacement.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
