HP Pavilion x360 Laptop - 14m-dw0013dx

When I tent to do everyday activities on my laptop my fan makes a slight noise and then it will stop for a minute or two and repeat. I have opened the case and watched my fan run it stops for a split second and when it starts to run again it makes a noise and then stops. It didn’t do this a week ago and it gets progressively worse as the laptop is functioning. At the start it would just make a constant like vibrating noise and then recently it does like a burst type vibrating noise. I’ve blown air into the fans and everything.

Hi @Sebastian100,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A buzzing noise followed by the fan stopping and starting again repeatedly is a common sign of a malfunctioning laptop fan. The buzzing noise is usually caused by the fan blades hitting against something, and the fan stopping and starting again is likely due to the fan motor struggling to turn the blades properly.

Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Clean the fan and surrounding area: Dust and debris can accumulate around the fan, causing it to make noise and run less efficiently. Shut down the laptop and unplug it, then use a can of compressed air or a soft-bristled brush to gently clean the fan and surrounding area.
  • Check for loose or damaged parts: While you're cleaning the fan, check for any loose or damaged parts that may be causing the noise. Tighten any loose screws or connections and replace any damaged parts if necessary.
  • Adjust the power settings: Sometimes the fan noise can be reduced by adjusting the power settings of your laptop. Go to the Control Panel and select Power Options, then choose a power plan that balances performance with energy efficiency.
  • Update or reinstall the drivers: Faulty or outdated drivers can sometimes cause the fan to malfunction. Go to the HP website and download the latest drivers for your laptop, or uninstall and reinstall the existing drivers to see if that resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
