HP Notebook - 15-bw032nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My laptop began to freeze within 30 minutes of a startup to where I kept having to force ata shutdown with the power button since I couldn't open anything, even keyboard shortcuts, like for the task manager would do absolutely nothing.  I attempted system restore about 3 xs and it would not complete. So I wanted to see if the Recovery Manager had any options to fix the issue. I selected File Backup first just in case. The program progress window clearly states this process may take several minutes. It's been 14 hours and it has been stuck at 10% on the same file for at least an hour. I'm attempting to be patient, but I have a feeling that the File Backup is not going to continue. There is a cancel option at the bottom. I would appreciate insight as to if I cancel the process will it mess things up more? It's still in the scanning 1st phase to create a list of files to backup. 14 hours to not even have the initial list. So if cancel won't hurt it and if it doesn't stop it. Is my next step to force a shutdown again? I am wanting to know all the angles here before proceeding. What would be the recommendation to do next if I would love to save my files if possible. I did create a recovery USB drive from the update and security portion of settings in windows 10. I've never have used one before but set it up for such an occasion. Not sure how to use it properly though. Please help.

Hi
PLEASE POST ANY RESULTS.
First:- Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.

Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.
Rinse and Repeat; Re-Connect the AC adapter.

NOW begin checking/testing/proving the Hardware is fit for purpose.
Power on your PC, press ESC (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).
AND/OR
HOW DO I USE DIAGNOSTICS?

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics is a Windows-based utility that allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. The tool runs within the Windows operating system in order to diagnose hardware failures. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows comes pre-installed on new HP computers, but if not on yours, download here:-

That was further than I have been able to get. I followed your direction. And repeatedly pressed esc. It brought my up the list of options. I first tried f2 and it gave me what resembled the command prompt line cursor and nothing after. So I unplugged and restarted it the same way. This time I selected the recovery f11 option. Currently I have my typical hp symbol in the center of the screen, it says please wait below that, and having the swirling circle. I am waiting for it to go to its black screen. Which this seem to go to a black screen following. And yep black screen again. Ot has randomly

Hi

I suspect you have a failed/failing Hard Disk Drive that needs replacing.

The contents are probably corrupted, however.........

From 2016 onwards there is a possible recovery option via the cloud...
HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 7 & 10)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205
OR
This First part only works when a valid Recovery Partition is enabled.
If it displays an error message then move onto the Second part,
OR if you have data you wish to try and save using the XCOPY command.
Then create your own Repair/Recovery/Rebuild/Re-install media or buy a set from HP.

Turn off the computer.
Disconnect all connected devices and cables, Media Drives, USB drives, printers, & faxes.
Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.
WARNING - ONE WAY ONLY, WIPES ALL DATA - NON-RECOVERABLE
Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second,
until the Choose an option screen is displayed, and then continue.

On the Choose an Option screen, click Troubleshoot, and work your way through the screens.

Second Part:-
This may require another PC. Find and Download your .iso from…
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Expand/Extract/Burn the iso Image onto a DVD/USB as needed.
Microsoft’s Creator Tool will make the required DVD or USB.

If in doubt please ask.

When it does the black screen there is nothing that I am aware of, other than the restart prossess that you provided already, that will change or or make usable. So what happens now? If I can't seem to get the recovery manager to reset from t I am pp

Hi

I did create a recovery USB drive from the update and security portion of settings in windows 10.

Boot the PC with that, ESC and F9 probably.

It had finally let me get to system reset after about 24 hours, then another 24 for getting ready. I clicked my sign in to begin at 4pm yesterday and it went to 1%. Here it is almost 10am the next morning and it's still at 1%. I have a sneaking suspicion you are correct about the hard drive being failed or failing. Since my online english course starts on the 8th, I am going to leave it and see if it finally does anything. I am also on the search for a new laptop since it will be needed before too long. If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate. But I don't know of any other step that will help it through this process.

Hi

Use another OS that doesn't need a HDD and hope the course work is accessible.
