Pavilion dv6
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Recently after updating to Windows 10 the fingerprint reader just wouldn't work on my Pavilion dv6. I tried other methods I found on the forum, and I'm looking for a proper driver to get the fingerprinter reader to work. I tried downloading HP SimplePass (which has been removed from my PC while updating the OS) hoping it would get my fingerprint reader to work, but no luck.  I also looked in the settings (in the device manager) for biomeric devices, and I found a driver with an exclamation mark, indicating that it wouldn't work. So right now I need a proper solution to get my fingerprint reader working.

Thank you,

Nikil

Hello @Nikil1503,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I read your post and understand that the finger print reader is no longer working on your HP Pavilion dv6 after upgrading to Windows 10. I am happy to help you resolve this issue.

First, please start with a hard reset.

Once that is complete, follow the troubleshooting steps in this document:

HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshooting a Fingerprint Reader (I know this is a Windows 8 document but most of the steps will be the same for Windows 10)

If the document did not help you resolve the issue, try restoring the BIOS and then check for Windows updates. For more specific information please provide your product model using this link to find the product.

Thank you, I look forward to your response with the outcome.

If this post has helped you, show your appreciation by selecting the thumbs up!

Hey!

Thanks for your valuable reply. But the only problem here: I'd not want to reset my computer in any way, as it is a family PC and I'm pretty sure no one else in my family would like that.

Thanks again!

Hello @Nikil1503,

Thank you for the reply!

Did you try any of the steps from the troubleshooting document?

Restoring the BIOS shouldn't erase any data or settings that pertains to the operating system.

Losing data and settings in any situation is not a pleasant time, I recommend creating backup and restore media!

Hey,

Thanks a lot for your support. I'm not much of a techie (just a student) so I was just worried of my PC. After your reply, I'm pretty confident of going ahead with the steps you've posted earlier.

Thanks again!

Thanks @FlashRam1714,

It worked, and now I can use my biometric scanner after more than a couple of months.

Thanks again!

I fixed the problem by uninstalling all drivers and software for SimplePass and Validity, and then had Windows 10 installing the software for the device when detecting the fingerprint device again.

Hey there,

It looks like you have found a solution to this persisting problem of mine. Could you guide me through solving this issue on my PC? I hope you have replied to the thread keeping in mind that my PC is a HP Pavilion dv6. Anyway, your method might work on my machine even if its not meant for the dv6, so your precious guidance is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The fix I describe here, is related to a problem with using the fingerprint sensor to login to Windows, after a Windows 10 update around july this year. The method worked on my HP Pavillion dv6: From "uninstall programs" in control panel, remove any software related to the fingerprint sensor: "Validity ..." and "SimplePass.." after uninstall, go to the "Device Manager" and make sure that the biometric device is not recognized by Windows any more. Rescan the hardware and let Windows install the driver. Go to "sign in options" under settings, and you should be able to configure "Windows Hello" with the fingerprint sensor. Good luck!
