Hi @StevenSeah,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering two issues with your HP laptop: a flickering screen and a prompt to set up a PIN after not using it for a month. Here are the steps to address these issues.
Flickering Screen
Screen flickering can be caused by various factors including software issues, driver problems, or hardware malfunctions. Here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue:
Check for Software Issues
- Safe Mode: Boot your laptop in Safe Mode to see if the flickering persists. If it doesn't, the issue might be related to a software conflict.
- To enter Safe Mode, restart your laptop and press F8 (or Shift + F8) during startup, then select Safe Mode from the options.
Update or Roll Back Display Drivers
Update Display Drivers: Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause screen flickering.
- Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Display adapters section.
- Right-click on your display adapter and select Update driver.
- Follow the prompts to update the driver.
Roll Back Display Drivers: If the issue started after a recent update, rolling back the driver might help.
- In Device Manager, right-click on your display adapter and select Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab and click on Roll Back Driver.
Check for Hardware Issues
- External Monitor: Connect your laptop to an external monitor. If the flickering only occurs on the laptop screen, it might be a hardware issue with the display.
- Inspect Hardware: Ensure that the screen is properly connected to the motherboard (if you're comfortable opening your laptop).

Setting Up a PIN
When you haven't used your laptop for a while, Windows might prompt you to set up a PIN for security reasons. Here's how to proceed:
Set Up the PIN
- Follow the on-screen prompts to set up a new PIN. This typically involves entering your Microsoft account password and then choosing a PIN.
If You Encounter Issues
- Restart: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve minor glitches. Restart your laptop and try setting up the PIN again.
- Check Internet Connection: Ensure your laptop is connected to the internet, as setting up a PIN might require online verification.
- Use Microsoft Account: If you have issues with setting up the PIN, you can use your Microsoft account password to log in temporarily.
Combining the Steps
Since you have both issues at the same time, start by trying to set up the PIN. If the flickering makes it difficult to complete this step, try the display troubleshooting steps first, especially booting into Safe Mode, to see if it helps stabilize the screen long enough to set up the PIN.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
