my recovery (D) only has .97GB free of 11.3GB, how do I free up more recovery space/GB

You don't!  leave it alone -- if you mess with it, you will "break" it. 

 

The Recovery drive is used only to store a compressed OEM Windows image that is used to do factory resets.

 

There is no reason for you to be accessing that drive.
