I have had this omnibook laptop for over 6months, and as of few weeks it started to freeze  while opening the usual applications, even while only opening one app begins to freeze.

I tried:

1) windows update and drivers, multiple restarts

2) hp recovery

3) Reset it multiple times with and without personal files restoring.

I really tried old things a normal IT Engineer like me has done in the past, however i do not want to void the warranty and venture into the hardware part.

Please any further advice is appreciate it or step-by-step on how to return it to the merchant (HP)

regards,

Oz

found several errors in the event viewer...

"Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume7'. This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot. The final status was 0xC03A001C."

I am going with the bias that the troublemaker here is McAfee conflicting with Windows Defender... so opted for unistalling McAfee for now and see how the computer behaves. if I do not come back to my own reply/case it meant that the frozen screen issue went away along with McAfee 😄 or I have sent the Laptop to HP.

Hi @FrankyOz,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. You've already done a thorough job troubleshooting this issue like a seasoned IT engineer. Based on your steps and the event viewer error: "Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume7'. This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot. The final status was 0xC03A001C."

This error typically points to storage-related issues, such as:

  • corrupted volume or partition
  • failing SSD/HDD
  • Driver conflicts (especially with third-party security software like McAfee)
  • File system filter drivers are not attaching properly (used by antivirus, backup, or encryption software)

You're right to suspect McAfee. It installs low-level filter drivers that can interfere with Windows Defender and system processes. If uninstalling McAfee resolves the freezing, that’s a strong indicator it was the culprit.

Here are a few more steps you can try before considering a service request:

1. Run CHKDSK and SFC

These tools check for file system and OS corruption: chkdsk C: /f /r
                                                                                              sfc /scannow

2. Check Storage Health

Use Windows PowerShell: Get-PhysicalDisk | Select MediaType, Size, SerialNumber, HealthStatus

Or use HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (press F2 at boot) to run a Storage Test.

3. Disable Fast Startup

Sometimes fast startup causes boot-time driver issues:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup

4. Clean Boot

Try a clean boot to rule out third-party services:

  • Type msconfig > Services tab > Hide Microsoft services > Disable all
  • Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all startup items

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Vikram,

I have got back home and the laptop gets repeating similiar hanging/freezing behaviours, though everytime this happens I press and release the power button - without rebooting completely - this seems to kill that process which causes this issue, as you may know working like this is not really sustainable. This laptop has a really good hardware, in a way it was running like a Porshe earlier and now is moving like a Jetta (with a carburator).

Before taken off to my vacation (27 Aug) i had to once again reset the laptop and start from scratch. Removed McAfee and even MS Edge, only using Chrome. I really do not know what else to try, this is really annoying and time consuming.

Today, i have also spotted this other error in the event viewer.

Event ID 1002....Source Application Hangs

The program LocationNotificationWindows.exe version 10.0.22621.5331 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

and Event ID 1796....

The Secure Boot update failed to update a Secure Boot variable with error Unknown HResult Error code: 0x800700c1. For more information, please see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2169931

and hundreds of these, Event ID's on this.....

The description for Event ID 1036 from source mtkwecx cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table

Please advise how to proceed.

Hi @FrankyOz,

Thank you for getting back and letting me know that you still have an issue. Request you to please try running a hardware test on the pc to check the component function.

Extensive Test -
1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
4. Click Extensive Test.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I am having the exact same issues, also on an Omnibook that I have had for around 6 months.

Laptop hangs or goes very painfully slow, especially when opening web browser or MS office apps. Event viewer reports those same three events that you saw @FrankyOz - Event ID 1002 , Event ID 1796 and lots of Event ID 1036

Tried all the things that you mentioned and not fixed. The one thing that did help was to disable hardware graphics acceleration in the options/settings in the apps. This reduced the frequency of laptop hanging quite a bit.

Still waiting for HP support to call me back. I am very disappointed as I bought expensive laptop from reputable brand so I wouldn't have such hassle.

HP support contacted me and provided the solution of reinstalling windows (back up your files first).

Download windows and create a bootable usb flash drive, and it all worked fine, i have upgraded also to Pro version after the fresh install.

My guess is that HP should also do the same for your case.
