Hello Earthlings,
I hope that you are doing just fine today. I have an issue that i would like to fix !
I have a laptop that is old and used by a person that never maintained it. I would like to give the pc a fresh copy of the computer, however the windows 7 disc is gone and i have the product key of the operating system.
I go to the microsoft website and contact an agent, he tells me asap that i need to enter this URL so i can get a fresh copy of the OS:https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7
I enter the product key and get the following error:
Error
The product key you've entered appears to be for software which was pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options.
The Laptop is out of warranty and i cannot get to speak with somebody from HP directly. If you have a solution for me it would be nice.
Thank you so much,
Best regards,
Anthony

Hi, @AnthonyMan
If the PC has a W7 Pro product key, and you live in the USA/Canada, call HP at the number below and see if you can still order W7 recovery media for it.

I am surprised that model doesn't have a W8.1 product key in the BIOS, because usually if it had W7 Pro installed, there were downgraded rights from W8.1 Pro to W7 Pro, and no W7 product key was attached to the notebook's case.
You can see from the quickspecs below, that normally those PC's came with W8.1.

Anyway, you may want to check the BIOS to see if there is a W8.1 Pro key in there and you can install W8.1 Pro for free.
I have zipped up and attached a free utility below that will show you if there is a W8.1 Pro product key in the BIOS.
Security support for W7 ends in a few months, so you may want to install a more recent operating system.
If the PC is still operational on W7, there is one other thing you can try too, and that is to see if you can still get the free upgrade from W7 to W10.

It has worked for me a couple-three months ago, and even much more recently for this forum member...
