HP Zbook 17 G5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I ran HP update it did a bios update. This update seemed to fail and booted to a black screen. I tried to follow these steps:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833#usbrecovery

And it looked like it was working except it rebooted and sits stuck at the "HP Protected by HP Sure Start" splash screen. I can hit esc, f1, f10, ect and it says it's doing stuff in the bottom left but it never completes any commands. it just sits there and will not attempt to "restore" the bios again with a windows +b or +v reboot. Any ideas?

There are various reasons that causes BIOS update prevents Windows from booting:

  • You flashed BIOS with an unsupported version.
  • You used the unsupported third party software to update BIOS.
  • Or, you interrupted the flashing procedure.

However, to fix the system boot failure after faulty BIOS update you can try the below methods:

  1. Reset CMOS
  2. Try booting into Safe mode
  3. Tweak BIOS settings
  4. Flash BIOS again
  5. Reinstall the system
  6. Replace your motherboard

Further, you can also check out the below link that will guide you with the above methods in details:

Hope it will help!

I didn't do any weird custom bios flashing. I ran HP update and it installed the release that was pushed on 3 September 21. I didn't interrupt the flashing process either, I literally wasn't even in the room.

1.  key combination to do this produces no response

2. it's stuck at the protected by HP sure start splash screen and doesn't come close to getting into windows

3.  it's stuck at the protected by HP sure start splash screen and doesn't come close to getting into bios settings

4.  it's stuck at the protected by HP sure start splash screen and won't let me attempt to recover or reflash the bios with windows b or windows v

5.  it's stuck at the protected by HP sure start splash screen so attempting to reinstall the system isn't going to work. It can't even get into the bios or system recovery mode.

6. replacing the motherboard might work but it's a work computer so I can't just go off and do that on my own
