Hi everyone. My HP 14s-fq0005na laptop is stuck in an updates reboot loop. It just shows the HP logo, then says "updates are underway please keep your computer on". Then says " restarting" and then reboots and then the loop starts again.
I have tried finding information online. I've seen a suggestion to take the battery out for a total power down but the battery isn't accessible on this model.
I can't find any way to get the laptop into Safe mode.
I did manage to get a BIOS startup and did a BIOS update but it didn't fix the issue. No BIOS options seemed helpful.
I've seen suggestions of tapping f4, f5 and f8 during startup for safe mode but none of them worked.
Ive even seen suggestions to go to start control panel, which obviously isn't an option if I can't make it to the login screen.
I'm at my whits end. Please suggest anything that can get me out of this updates reboot loop.
Thanks in advance.

Hi @abcd1029,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Getting stuck in an update reboot loop is a frustrating issue. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem on your HP 14s laptop.
Hard Shutdown
- Force a Hard Shutdown: Hold down the power button until the laptop completely powers off (usually about 10 seconds).
- Wait: Leave the laptop off for a minute or two before turning it back on.
Access Advanced Startup Options
Since you can't access Safe Mode through regular means, try accessing the Advanced Startup Options.
- Interrupt the Boot Process:
- Power on the laptop.
- As soon as you see the HP logo, hold down the power button to force a shutdown.
- Repeat this process 3-4 times. On the 4th restart, Windows should boot into the Recovery Environment.
Use Advanced Startup Options
Startup Repair:
- Once in the Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Windows will attempt to fix startup issues automatically.
System Restore:
- In the Advanced options menu, select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point before the update issue started. Follow the instructions to restore your system.
Safe Mode:
- In the Advanced options menu, select Startup Settings.
- Click Restart.
- Once it restarts, you'll see a list of options. Press 4 or F4 to start in Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
Reset Your PC
If the above steps don’t work, consider resetting your PC:
- In the Troubleshoot menu, select Reset this PC.
- You can choose to keep your files or remove everything.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your PC.

Use a Bootable USB Drive
If you can't access the recovery environment, you can use a bootable USB drive to repair or reinstall Windows:
Create a Windows Installation Media:
- On another computer, download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's website.
- Use it to create a bootable USB drive.
Boot from USB:
- Insert the USB drive into your HP 14s.
- Power on the laptop and press the key to enter the boot menu (usually F9 for HP laptops).
- Select the USB drive to boot from it.
Repair Your Computer:
- Once the Windows setup starts, select your language preferences and click Next.
- Click Repair your computer in the bottom left corner.
- This will take you to the Windows Recovery Environment where you can try Startup Repair, System Restore, or other advanced options.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
