PAVILION 15-N228SS TOUCH SMART
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

The original OS was W8 and it was upgraded to W10.

I have tried with the start up menu: F2 System diagnostics and everything is fine.

When I try to start it, it gets into a loop:

- Logo HP and the time elapse counter

-  Trying to recover the installation

-   Undoing the changes made in the laptop

- A black pop up appears for a second and it starts all over again

Can I recover the personal files before recovering the system from scratch? If so, how, which steps to follow

If not, which are the steps to recover the system....

I have pressed F11 and it looks delicate 😞

@JCA2013

This message generally means that a Windows Update has failed and is trying to RollBack the PC to the state it was in BEFORE the Update -- but more often than not, that does not work -- so it keeps trying over and over and over again.  It is basically NEVER going to fix itself on its own.

If you want to recover personal files, then you need to boot the PC from external media such that you can then plug in a USB stick and copy off your files.

What MIGHT work is the following:
1) On a working PC, use this link to download and install a free copy of Macrium Reflect: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
2) Once that is installed, use the option to create a Boot USB stick (Other Tasks --> Create Rescue Media). This creates a bootable USB stick that runs a version of Windows.
3) Boot the PC from that USB stick. To do this, try pressing F9 repeatedly while booting to get a boot drive menu, or press the Esc key repeatedly while booting to get an HP utilities menu, and select the boot menu from that
4) Be patient ... as booting from a USB stick is really, really slow
5) Once in the MR recovery environment, you can then remove the USB stick.
6) Insert a USB stick for holding data and, down at the bottom left of the windows screen are some icons. Select the one on the right to open a form of File Explorer.
7) Use the File Explorer app to locate the files you need and copy them to the USB stick.

Good Luck

Dear WAWood,

Thank you for your guideline.

I have managed to recover the private files and to recovery the system with the Windows tools,

But the original OS was W8.1 and now I have to figure out how to upgrade it again up to W10.

Any idea?
