I bought this laptop thinking it was good enough for what I needed but have so many issues - takes like ten minutes to log on, often get black screen issues, locks on HP icon and won’t go any further then today it seems to have lost the c drive!?! I managed to update the bios and at least I can get on to windows now but it’s not right - won’t install the windows update, the trouble shooter just runs and runs - do anyone have this laptop and have the same issues, it’s been like this since I brought it, i should have sent it back like the worst laptop I have ever owned!! Is it better to buy a new one and stay away from HP??

@Mel-hose, Welcome to HP Support Community!
I understand you have multiple issues with your PC. Let us try to resolve one at a time. Follow the steps below-
For log on issues, turn on the fast startup.
- Search for and open “Power options” in the Start Menu.
- Click “Choose what the power buttons do” on the left side of the window.
- Click “Change settings that are currently unavailable.”
- Under “Shutdown settings” make sure “Turn on fast startup” is enabled.
For black screen issues, check with an external monitor and see if it works. Refer to the document HP Notebook PCs - Connecting a Monitor, Projector, or TV for help.
For icon related issues, delete the icon cache and see if that helps. Steps are as follows-
- Open Start and do a search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
-
Type the following command to navigate to the icon cache database location and press Enter:
cd %homepath%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
-
Type the following command to verify the icon cache database files are at the location and press Enter:
dir iconcache*
The output of the dir command should list these database files:
-
Type the following command to stop File Explorer and press Enter:
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
Important: Once you terminate File Explorer, your desktop background and taskbar will disappear, leaving a black screen — but it's OK, it's only temporarily. You need to close File Explorer to be able to delete the icon cache files. Otherwise, you won't be able to do it.
-
Type the following command to delete the iconcache files and press Enter:
del iconcache*
Quick Tip: If you get access denied trying to remove the files, you're probably not running Command Prompt with as an administrator. Repeat these steps, but making sure Command Prompt starts with administrative privileges.
-
Type the following command to verify that you successfully deleted the icon cache files and press Enter:
dir iconcache*
If you still see some iconcache files, then it's likely that some apps are still running, which will prevent you from deleting the database files. Make sure to close them all, and repeat the steps.
-
Type the following command to start File Explorer and press Enter:
explorer.exe
-
Close Command Prompt to complete the task.
Once you completed the steps, Windows 10 will automatically recreate the database files with fresh new icons.
Keep in mind that these steps won't delete and recreate the thumbnails.
I would also suggest you use HP Support Assistant to install the updates or you can manually download and install the updates from www.hp.com/drivers
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
