HP Notebook 15s-fq1010na
Microsoft Windows 11

Ok, so I made the mistake of upgrading to Windows 11, trusting the microsoft prompt that said the laptop was compatible without checking that HP supported it on my machine.

I'm now in a situation where the graphics driver that is installed by windows updates bugs out and gives me a black/flickering screen. I can update the driver directly from intel and this fixes it, but then then next windows update will just overwrite it.

I've checked in recovery and there is no 'Go back' option to revert to Windows 10 and using 'Reset this PC' just reinstalls a clean Windows 11 with the same issues.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Hi:

See if this works...

Use the graphics driver from Intel that works for your notebook.

After you install it and restart the PC, run the Microsoft Hide Windows Update utility that I zipped up and attached below.

The reason I recommend that you do this is because Windows Update will probably try and install the older graphics driver again as you discovered.

When you run the utility, it will search for updates that haven't been installed.

If it finds an Intel graphics driver update, check the box to hide the update.

The program will run again and report the problem is 'fixed.

Exit out of the utility and you should be fine going forward.

Thank you, I will give this a try! It definitely sounds like it should fix the issue.

Am I right in thinking I now need to keep a close eye on the display driver in case I need to update is, as Windows won't do anything?

You're very welcome.

If Intel releases a newer graphics driver update than the one that is causing havoc with your notebook's graphics, you will get that one and any future updates provided you don't need to run the utility to block any of those updates from installing due to issues.

In other words, the tool will only block the updates you see and check, not any newer ones that may come out.
