I updated my laptop to the latest firmware, F.25, and immediately after that, my right USB port started having issues.

When I connect my USB mouse to that port, after 5–10 seconds, the mouse cursor freezes, and the only way to make it work again is to unplug the mouse and reconnect it. Of course, a few seconds later, the mouse stops working again.

I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked. I reinstalled Windows 11, removed the USB devices from Windows 11 Device Manager, and also tried turning off my laptop and holding down the power button for 45 seconds. Nothing worked.

I also went into the BIOS and disabled the USB devices, then enabled them again, but the problem persisted.

So, my question is: Is there a way to force a firmware downgrade?

I know for a fact that the issue is caused by firmware F.25 because I have an identical laptop running firmware F.22, and everything works perfectly on that one.

Could someone please let me know?

Hi @chinyu,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If the USB issue started immediately after the BIOS was updated to F.25, we understand your concern. HP does not generally support manually forcing a BIOS downgrade. However, you can try a BIOS Recovery, which may restore the appropriate BIOS image if the currently installed version is corrupted or incomplete.

Please try the following:

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold the Windows + B keys, then press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
  4. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until the HP BIOS Update/Recovery screen appears.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the recovery.

For detailed instructions, refer to: HP Notebook PCs - Recovering the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) | HP® Support

Once the recovery is complete:

  • Press F10 at startup to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Verify the BIOS version that is installed.
  • Test the affected USB port again.

Additionally, please let us know:

  • The exact HP notebook model/product number.
  • Whether the issue occurs with other USB devices (USB flash drive, keyboard, external drive) or only with the mouse.
  • Whether the same behavior is observed in HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.

If BIOS Recovery completes successfully and the USB port continues to disconnect with multiple devices, please share the BIOS version currently shown in BIOS Setup so we can review further.

Take care and have an amazing day!
