I spilled coffee on my laptop(2 days ago). The mouse was working at first after the spill but now I can only type. It’s coming up with the message saying that “bios has detected that the storage capacity of the internal battery has been reduced. This may be caused by environmental factors such as low ambient operating temperature or could be due to battery pack aging. Operating your system and a warmer location operating your unit for some period of time may resolve this condition. If the condition persist or if you have an older system, please contact HP service.”

@Quan212, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Battery Alert Due to Coffee Spill!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It seems your laptop is experiencing issues after a coffee spill, which can potentially cause damage to internal components. The battery alert you're seeing indicates that the storage capacity of the internal battery has been reduced, possibly due to environmental factors or the aging of the battery pack.

Here are some steps you can take to address this issue:

Power Off and Disconnect:

  • Turn off your laptop immediately.
  • Disconnect all peripheral devices and unplug the AC adapter from your laptop.
  • If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out.

Dry the Laptop:

  • Place the laptop in a dry, ventilated area. You can use silica gel packets or a dehumidifier to absorb moisture more effectively.
  • Ensure the laptop is completely dry before attempting to power it on again. This might take a few days, depending on the extent of the spill.

Check for Residual Damage:

  • Inspect the internal components if possible. Depending on your technical expertise, focus on checking for visible signs of damage, such as corrosion or residue on the battery connectors or other components. This may require professional help if you're not comfortable doing it yourself.

Update the BIOS:

  • Check if a BIOS update is available for your laptop on the HP Software and Driver Downloads page. Updating the BIOS can sometimes resolve battery issues.
  • Caution: Ensure that this update is appropriate for your model and that you carefully follow the instructions to avoid damaging your system further.

Perform Battery Diagnostics:

  • Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. This tool allows you to test your battery’s health and performance.
  • Access this by turning on the laptop, immediately pressing esc repeatedly, and then selecting f2 when the startup menu appears.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
