Hi, I am trying to perform a full system recovery on my HP Envy x360 (2-in-1) using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool, but the recovery fails during the PASS2_BBV1 stage and triggers a CTO Panic reboot.

Here is the exact error output from the recovery logs:

[AppsLog]
[PASS2_BBV1][PIN_ERROR_MSG][ChkError.cmd] There are FAILED message in the
[C:\system.sav\Logs\CheckLog\PASS2_BBV1_BBApps.log]
Result = FAILED

The recovery environment then reports:

found [1] SW issue[s]
Trigger CTO panic...
[PANIC.cmd] has been called at non-WinPE environment.

All other checks pass (DumpFile, TIMEOUT, RMFAIL), and then the system reboots automatically.

I am unable to open Command Prompt because Shift + F10 is disabled in HP Cloud Recovery on this model, so I cannot read the PASS2_BBV1_BBApps.log directly from WinPE.

Error repeats even after:

  • recreating Cloud Recovery USB

  • trying a second USB drive

  • resetting BIOS to defaults

  • wiping SSD before recovery

  • disabling/re-enabling Secure Boot

It looks like one of the HP bundled apps during BBApps installation is failing, but I cannot see which one.

Request:

If anyone knows:

  1. What typically causes PASS2_BBV1_BBApps.log failures on HP Envy x360

  2. How to access logs when Shift+F10 is disabled

  3. Whether this is a bad recovery image or a hardware/SSD issue

  4. Any known workarounds for CTO PANIC during Cloud Recovery

I would appreciate your help.

Thanks!

Hi @AKS2410,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The cause for PASS2_BBV1_BBApps.log Failures on HP Envy x360 could be because of Corrupted Recovery Media or Server/Download Issue or also  a corrupt or badly built recovery image / media can lead to the PASS2_BBV1_BBApps.log error.

The  Workarounds for CTO Panic During Cloud Recovery on HP Envy x360

  1. Recreate Recovery Media on a Different USB Stick
  2. Run Hardware Diagnostics First
    • Before re-running recovery, test the SSD / drive using HP’s built-in diagnostics (UEFI).
    • If the diagnostic fails, replace the SSD / drive before retrying recovery.

  3. Clean the Partition Table / Fresh Partitioning
    • When recovery fails and gives you a “retry” loop, consider doing a manual clean install instead:
      • Boot from the recovery USB.
      • When presented with partitions, delete all existing partitions (especially system partitions created by previous failed attempts).
      • Let Windows Setup recreate the partitions (OEM recovery may recreate system.sav / recovery partitions).
    • Also try deleting all partitions and then install from unallocated space.

What we would recommend is as follows

  • First, run diagnostics on your SSD using HP’s built-in hardware test.
  • Second, recreate the recovery USB using a different / good-quality stick and stable internet.
  • Third, attempt recovery again, but if it fails, capture the logs (via “Save Log” if offered) and examine / share them.
  • Fourth, if repeated recovery fails, do a clean Windows install, and then manually restore drivers.

I hope this helps.

Hi  @Deep_World,

I am actually performing the recovery using a USB 3.0 drive, and it still fails unexpectedly. I will try once more using the manual installation method instead of the automatic recovery.

Because of this issue, I had to install Ubuntu temporarily, as it was affecting my work.

I’ll reattempt the process following your suggestions and will update the results.

Thanks for the detailed explanation and guidance.

Hi @AKS2410

Thank you for the update! It’s completely understandable that you had to install Ubuntu temporarily to keep your work moving that was a smart workaround.

Go ahead and reattempt the installation using the manual method when you can. Sometimes switching from automatic recovery to manual installation does resolve these unexpected failures.

Please keep us posted on how it goes or if you run into anything else during the process. We’re here to help and will gladly assist further once you have the results.

Thanks again for your patience and for trying the suggested steps and kindly keep us posted.

Hi @AKS2410,

Thanks for your response.

It looks like that there is an issue with the hardware, I would recommend you to please run the hardware diagnostics on the PC and please let me know the result, So we can try to find and get additional help on the PC.

Extensive Test -
1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
4. Click Extensive Test.

Kindly run the test and update us with the result of the test.

Best regards

Hello, Im having the same issue as you any update on how to fix it?

HP Recommended

Not yet, as didn't recieved any update regarding this from the HP officials , once you go the service center they will fix it but again there's a catch, any other thing will not work , so clean reinstall the windows from Microsoft official website and don't update the windows after installation except the necessary driver, because if you update your windows hello will stop working and even the shutdown and restart process will take 30 minutes and may be didn't work at all , and laptop will become very slow. As you install official windows, you will loose the other apps & software that comes with the laptop, but atleast it will work , but I switched to ubuntu as this was becoming a complete headache.
