In attempting to perform a system recovery, the HP Cloud Recovery Tool does not see my USB drive (G:). I can see the USB drive on the HP desktop PC's File Explorer I am trying to use, but I never get prompted to select any drives, it just automatically tries to use my SSD C: drive.

I have tried using the BIOS based System Recovery, but it is not recognizing my BitLocker Recovery key (recovered from the laptop).

I used the directions at the following link and was able to rebuild the BCD and successfully repaired it, now up and running Windows 11.

BTW - the process fails at Step 6 under "Run the HP Cloud Recovery Tool", where you are supposed to be able to select the USB drive where the recovery files are supposed to be copied.

Hi @JohnnyRock0322

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how discouraging it must feel when the recovery process stalls at the very step where you expect to select your USB drive. You’ve already tried important steps like BIOS recovery and retrieving the BitLocker key, so thank you for putting in that effort—it helps narrow down the situation.

Let’s go through some focused actions to get the HP Cloud Recovery Tool to recognize your USB drive:

USB Port
Connect the USB drive directly to a rear port on the desktop. Avoid hubs or front ports.

Drive Size and Format
Use a USB drive with at least 32 GB capacity. Format it to FAT32 or NTFS before running the tool.

Run as Administrator
Right‑click the HP Cloud Recovery Tool and choose “Run as administrator.” This ensures proper detection of external drives.

Remove Other Drives
Disconnect other external storage devices temporarily so the tool focuses only on the USB drive.

Disk Management Check
Open Disk Management and confirm the USB drive has a letter assigned. If not, assign one manually.

Re‑download Recovery Image
If the tool skipped the USB selection step, restart it after clearing temporary files and re‑download the recovery image.

Let’s walk through the USB formatting process step by step so the HP Cloud Recovery Tool can properly recognize it:

Insert the USB drive
Plug the USB drive directly into a rear USB port on your desktop.

Open File Explorer
Press Windows + E to open File Explorer. Locate your USB drive under “This PC.”

Right‑click the USB drive
Select “Format” from the context menu.

Choose the file system

  • If the drive is 32 GB or smaller, select FAT32.
  • If the drive is larger, select NTFS.

Allocation unit size
Leave this at the default value.

Volume label
You can give the drive a name like “HPRecoveryUSB” to make it easy to identify.

Quick Format
Keep “Quick Format” checked, then click Start.

Confirmation
A warning will appear that all data will be erased. Click OK to proceed.

Completion
Once the format is complete, close the window. The USB drive is now ready for use with the HP Cloud Recovery Tool.

After formatting, restart the HP Cloud Recovery Tool and check if the USB drive is now selectable at Step 6.

I’m glad to hear you were able to rebuild the BCD and get Windows 11 running again—that’s a big step forward after the recovery tool kept stalling. It sounds like the USB recognition issue was sidestepped by repairing the boot configuration directly, which is often the most reliable way to bring the system back when the recovery environment doesn’t cooperate.

Since you’re now up and running, a couple of things you might consider to keep the system stable:

  • Create a fresh recovery USB now that the PC is healthy, so you have a fallback if the boot files ever get corrupted again.
  • Back up your data regularly using File History or OneDrive, so you don’t have to rely solely on recovery tools.
  • Keep BIOS and drivers updated from HP’s support page for your exact model, which helps avoid mismatches during recovery attempts.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. We're here to help!

Thanks again for your confirmation, and we wish you an amazing day ahead! 😊
