Hello forum users,
First of all, excuse me for my english i'm still learning.
& second, i have tried searching this question but there are two answers which i will tell after my question.
I own an hp dv6-3040sd notebook for about 7-8 years right now i think.
Despite it still being in good condition i'm not planning on using it anymore.
While i'm getting an new pc, or building one without an os.
So my question was can i use the windows 7 home product key on the bottom of the laptop,
to activate an windows 10 bootable USB clean install on my new pc?
So after some searching on the internet i found 2 answers.
1. Oh yeah no problem, using that old windows 7 key for windows 10 clean install activation? no problem at all.
2. Some laptops that have pre-installed windows, cant transfer the product key since it is bound to that specific laptop.
Those are the answers i found online, yet am i putting questionmarks at the second option since my old laptop has an windows 7 home edition product key on the bottom.
I dont think they would put an product key on the bottom of the laptop if it wouldnt be transferable right?
But i'm questioning myself right now if its even possible to activate windows 10 with an windows 7 key?
Well thats all i had to say,
if you have any comments or questions just let me know!
have a good day!

You asked: "can i use the windows 7 home product key on the bottom of the laptop,
to activate an windows 10 bootable USB clean install on my new pc?"
Answer:
(1) Windows 7 key is not enough to activate clean install Windows 10 in original laptop (itself) unless you upgrade to Windows 10 from original laptop and undergo subsequent automatic activation of Windows 10 through internet.
(2) You cannot transfer OEM Windows licence to any other machine than the original laptop.
You asked: "I dont think they would put an product key on the bottom of the laptop if it wouldnt be transferable right?"
Answer: 25 character product key was printed on COA sticker till Windows 7 only. This helped in clean installation of Windows 7 later on after buying the OEM laptop. From Windows 8 onwards, activation key is embedded in BIOS chip in the motherboard. So clean installation of Windows 8/8.1 would automatically detect this and get activated.
