HP ENVY - 17m-ce0013dx

It has been on this screen for 2 hours and appears to be frozen permanently. Will the BIOS recover and start over or is this thing going to be a brick now? I am leaving it on until I know more info.

Hi @NordicPC,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP ENVY - 17 laptop may be stuck during the BIOS update process, which can happen in rare cases. Typically, if the BIOS update process gets interrupted or freezes, there can be an option to recover or restart it. Here are some steps you can try.

Leave it on longer: Sometimes, BIOS updates can take a while, especially if it’s a large update. Leave it on for a few more hours just to see if the process completes.

Hard Reboot: If it’s been stuck for an extended period and there’s no sign of progress:

  • Hold the power button down for 10-15 seconds to force a shutdown.
  • Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on.

BIOS Recovery: Many HP laptops have a built-in recovery process that you can trigger manually:

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Hold the Windows key + B key, and then press the Power button. Keep holding the Windows + B keys until you hear a beeping sound or see a recovery screen.
  • This can initiate the BIOS recovery process from a backup if the BIOS update failed.

Check for Error Codes: If your laptop powers on but shows error codes or a recovery screen, you may need to follow the on-screen instructions to attempt a recovery.

Recovery from USB: If the above steps don’t work, you can create a recovery USB drive using another PC. Visit HP’s support website and search for the BIOS version for your model. Download it and follow their instructions to create a BIOS recovery USB.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
