Hi everyone,
I have an HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-ed0xxx, and I’ve been facing some issues with its performance and overheating. Here are the specs of my laptop:
- Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz, 2.30 GHz
- RAM: 32.0 GB (31.7 GB usable)
- System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
- Pen and Touch: Support with 10 touch points
Despite the decent specs, my laptop has been running slower than expected. It tends to lag when I have multiple applications open or am running resource-intensive software like Adobe Photoshop or during heavy web browsing sessions. I've also noticed it gets quite hot, especially around the keyboard area, which affects its performance over time.
I've tried basic troubleshooting steps like updating drivers, checking for malware, and closing unnecessary background processes, but the problems persist. I rely heavily on this laptop for content creation, including writing and testing Android apps like LokLok APK . For example, while working on a guide for the LokLok APK, my laptop often slows down or overheats, making it difficult to multitask efficiently.
Could these issues be related to the processor speed, cooling system, or something else? Has anyone experienced similar problems with this model, and if so, how did you resolve them? I'm open to any suggestions or optimizations that could help improve performance and reduce overheating.
Looking forward to your advice!

Hi @SophieAddams,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP ENVY x360 Convertible 15-ed0xxx is facing both performance and overheating issues, which can be frustrating, especially when working on resource-intensive tasks like app development or using Adobe Photoshop. Let's break down the likely causes and solutions for these problems:
1. Processor Throttling (Thermal Throttling)
Your Intel i7-10510U CPU is a power-efficient processor, but under heavy loads, it can get quite warm and throttle performance to prevent overheating. This could be why you're experiencing slowdowns when multitasking or using demanding applications.
2. Cooling and Ventilation
Overheating is often related to inadequate cooling. Your laptop may have dust buildup inside the fans or not enough thermal paste on the CPU/GPU, causing poor heat dissipation.
Solutions:
- Clean Air Vents and Fans: Check for dust accumulation around the cooling vents and fans. You can use compressed air to clean the vents carefully.
3. Optimizing Performance Settings
Windows may be running in a power-saving mode, limiting your CPU's maximum performance.
Solutions:
- Change Power Plan Settings: Go to Control Panel > Power Options and switch to High Performance or Ultimate Performance mode. This will maximize your CPU's performance but may lead to slightly more heat.
- Disable Background Apps: You already mentioned closing unnecessary apps, but ensure that any unwanted programs are not running in the background. You can check and manage startup programs through Task Manager under the "Startup" tab.
4. GPU and Graphics-Intensive Work
The laptop has integrated graphics (Intel UHD Graphics) that may not handle tasks like Photoshop or app development efficiently, which could also be contributing to the slowdowns.
Solutions:
- Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure you have the latest drivers for both Intel UHD Graphics and any other dedicated GPU if your laptop has one.
- Adjust Graphics Settings: For applications like Photoshop, lowering the resolution or graphics settings can help reduce the load on your GPU.
5. Overheating Prevention
- Cooling Pad: Using a laptop cooling pad with external fans can improve airflow and reduce overheating during intensive tasks.
6. Check for Malware and Performance Issues
Although you've checked for malware, using tools like Malwarebytes or Windows Defender for a thorough scan might help identify hidden issues. Additionally, a clogged system registry can sometimes cause performance problems.
7. Software Optimizations for Multitasking
Given that you often have multiple applications open, optimizing how they use system resources can help.
Solutions:
- Limit Background Processes in Photoshop: In Photoshop, go to Edit > Preferences > Performance and allocate more RAM or adjust the GPU settings to help improve performance.
- Use Lightweight Alternatives: For web browsing, consider using browsers known for efficiency, like Microsoft Edge or Firefox with minimal extensions, which consume fewer resources compared to Chrome.
8. BIOS and Driver Updates
Make sure your laptop is running the latest BIOS and drivers for both the CPU and GPU. HP regularly releases firmware updates that could improve system performance and thermal management.
Solutions:
- Update BIOS: You can check HP's support page for your model to download the latest BIOS update.
- Update All Drivers: Use either HP Support Assistant or manually update drivers from the HP website to ensure everything is up-to-date.
9. Factory Reset or Fresh Windows Installation
If the above solutions don't work, consider performing a fresh installation of Windows or a factory reset. This ensures that any underlying software issues are resolved and you have a clean, optimized system.
