Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my HP Envy laptop. It suddenly shuts down without any warning, even when the battery is fully charged or when it's plugged in.... I've checked for overheating, updated all drivers, and ran diagnostics, but nothing seems to fix the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? What steps can I take to troubleshoot or fix this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi @Jakob_Neufeld,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to deal with sudden shutdowns on your HP Envy laptop. There are several potential causes for this issue, and troubleshooting steps you can take to identify and possibly resolve it.

  • Check Power Settings and Battery: Sometimes, power settings or battery issues can cause unexpected shutdowns. Make sure your power settings are configured correctly and that the battery is functioning properly. You can check the battery health through HP diagnostics.
  • Update BIOS: Ensure your laptop's BIOS is up to date. Sometimes, BIOS updates address power management and system stability issues.
  • Check for Overheating: Even if you've checked before, verify that the laptop isn't overheating. Overheating can cause the system to shut down abruptly to prevent damage. Clean any dust from vents and ensure proper airflow.
  • Run Hardware Diagnostics: Use HP's built-in diagnostics tool (usually accessible by pressing F2 or ESC during startup) to check the hardware components such as RAM, CPU, and storage. Faulty hardware can sometimes cause unexpected shutdowns.
  • Check Event Viewer: In Windows, check the Event Viewer logs (type "Event Viewer" in the Start menu search bar) for any critical errors or warnings around the time of the shutdown. This can provide clues about what might be causing the issue.
  • Scan for Malware: Though less common, malware can sometimes cause system instability. Run a thorough scan using reputable antivirus software.
  • Update Drivers and Windows: Ensure all drivers are up to date, including graphics, chipset, and network drivers. Also, make sure Windows is fully updated.
  • Check External Devices: Occasionally, faulty external devices (like USB peripherals or external drives) can cause issues. Try disconnecting all non-essential devices and see if the problem persists.
  • Reset or Reinstall Windows: As a last resort, consider resetting Windows or performing a clean reinstall if other troubleshooting steps don't resolve the issue. This can help eliminate software-related problems.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, it may indicate a more serious hardware issue, such as a failing power supply, motherboard problem, or another internal component.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
