A virus got thru Mcafee and corrupted the HD. I was able to purchase a recovery USB from HP but ti failed. HP told me since the Amazon seller had upgraded the RAM from 4 GB to 16BG the warranted was no longer valid

Yes, unfortunately, that is correct regarding the warranty.

 

When a PC requires warranty work it must be sent in with its original hardware configuration, which means that you would have had to return the notebook to HP with just the original 4 GB memory chip HP installed.

 

All is not lost.

 

Even though the recovery media didn't work, you should be able to clean install Windows and be able to use the notebook again.
