My HP G9 245 fails to start after a pop up message, "we've removed an update after a start up failure" it boots until I put the password, then stays at the homescreen for 5-10 seconds then turns off. At times it doesn't boot completely. At times it writes on the boot screen "diagnostic check" . Please help.

Hi @Subtle-beast
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I understand that your notebook starts up, displays a message indicating that an update was removed after a startup issue, and then shuts down shortly after you log in.
To better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm:
- Did the issue begin after a Windows update, driver update, or BIOS update?
- Does the notebook shut down only after logging into Windows, or does it also turn off if left on the sign-in screen?
- Are you able to start the notebook in Safe Mode?
- Is the touchpad unresponsive all the time, or only after Windows loads?
- Do you notice any blinking LED codes or error messages before the system powers off?
In the meantime, kindly try the following steps:
1.Try Running HP Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn off the notebook.
- Turn it back on and repeatedly tap F2.
- Select System Tests.
- Run the Quick Test and then the Extensive Test.
Kindly let us know if any failure ID or error code is reported.
2.Check in Safe Mode
If Windows is loading briefly before shutting down, try entering Safe Mode:
- Power on the notebook and interrupt startup three times by holding the power button when Windows begins loading.
- Windows should enter Recovery Environment.
- Go to Troubleshoot -Advanced Options -Startup Settings -Restart.
- Press 4 to start in Safe Mode.
If the notebook remains stable in Safe Mode, the issue may be related to a recent update, driver, or software component.
3. Also try System Restore
From the Recovery Environment:
Troubleshoot -Advanced Options -System Restore
Choose a restore point dated before the issue started and check whether Windows loads normally afterward.

The fact that the notebook reaches the desktop and then powers off could indicate a driver, Windows update, software conflict, storage issue, or a hardware component failing during the startup process. The "Diagnostic Check" message suggests that the system is attempting to verify hardware health after detecting an abnormal shutdown or startup interruption.
I hope this helps.
