A couple days ago, my laptop started shutting down on its own after only minutes of use. When I say shut down, I mean the screen just goes black. Now every time I start it up it does this after only minutes of use. I'm currently concerned it will shut down again as I type this.

My laptop is only just over a year old. This only started happening after I charged my phone through my computer using a recently purchases USB phone charger, so I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the problems I am having. I've also noticed my laptop making a lot more noise than usual, but it does not feel hot.

I'm very concerned as this is a relatively new laptop and I have treated it very well, never dropped it and never damaged it in any way. I only use it for basic functions like Microsoft products, streaming and web searches.

Any advice or help with this problem would be much appreciated!

Thank you.

@DA1187 Greetings from the HP Community!

here's what you need to do:

If Windows suddenly restarts without warning, or restarts when you try to shut it down, it might be caused by one of several issues. Windows could be set to restart automatically when certain system errors occur. A BIOS update can also resolve the issue. Use the information in this document to resolve issues with the computer restarting unexpectedly.

If the computer restarts unexpectedly and then does not start to Windows, see one of the following documents for steps to resolve this issue:

In addition to the steps in this article, updating video card drivers is known to resolve many of the problems that can cause the computer to restart.

Windows restarts for no apparent reason

Follow the steps in this section, in order, until the problem is resolved.

Step 1: Disabling the automatic restart option to view error messages

Many hardware driver or operating system errors will cause the computer to display a specific error message before stopping the operation or shutting down the computer. However, if the Automatically restart option is enabled, an error message might not be displayed despite an error taking place. Disable this option to allow the computer to display the error message.

Follow these steps to disable the Automatically restart option:

  1. In Windows, search for and open View advanced system settings.

  2. Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

My computer did not restart. It is literally going black / shutting off. It does not turn itself back on. When i manually turn it back on, a message comes up on the screen saying that windows did not shut off properly.

@DA1187 In that case, do tell if the device turns off with the lights switching off as well, or is it that the lights remain on but the screen blacks out? If the device completely turns off, this could be a hardware malfunction with either the battery or the power connector, and I suggest you check with an alternate wall outlet and/or another adapter.

If the lights remain on while the screen blacks out, please attempt a BIOS recovery using the steps mentioned here,
And let us know how that pans out.
