I purchased this laptop from Costco in mid 2020 or 2021 jf I remember correctly, what I do remember is this computer has never been quick. It was slow out of the box, and Costco wouldn't stand behind the warranty. I have barely ever gotten the chance to use this thing because it will take up to an hour and a half just to get to the home screen. It came with windows 10 but even upgrading to 11 didn't fix anything. Reset it at least 10 times over the years and nada, and now it won't even download updates properly. I don't use a laptop but jf I could get this one working even decently I know I would use it, I just don't know what to do. Even without downloading anything on it, and nothing coming up in the RAM usage that I can see, jt works at a crawl.

Hi @scooterbro03,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP laptop. Slow performance can be caused by various factors, and there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to improve its speed. Here are some suggestions.

  • Check for Malware: Run a full antivirus scan to ensure that your laptop is not infected with malware. Malicious software can significantly impact performance.
  • Update Drivers: Make sure all your device drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, are up to date. Outdated drivers can lead to performance issues.
  • Disk Cleanup: Perform a disk cleanup to remove unnecessary files that may be taking up space on your hard drive. This can be done through the built-in Disk Cleanup tool on Windows.
  • Check for Background Processes: Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check for any resource-intensive processes running in the background. Close unnecessary applications and processes.
  • Upgrade RAM: If your laptop has a low amount of RAM, consider upgrading it. More RAM can improve overall system performance, especially when running multiple applications.
  • Storage Space: Ensure that you have sufficient free space on your hard drive. A lack of available storage can slow down your system.
  • Adjust Startup Programs: Disable unnecessary programs from starting up with your laptop. You can manage startup programs through the Task Manager or System Configuration.
  • Power Plan Settings: Adjust your power plan settings to ensure that your laptop is set for optimal performance. You can find these settings in the Control Panel under "Power Options."
  • Reset Windows Update Components: If you're having trouble with updates, resetting the Windows Update components might help. You can find instructions on how to do this on the Microsoft website.

Before proceeding with any of these steps, make sure to back up your important data.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
