Microsoft Windows 11

We purchased an HP Laptop 17 cn1053cl about 2 years ago, which has always booted extremely slow and takes a long time to connect to the Internet. It passes all hardware tests using the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics program. The specs says it has a 5400 RPM hard drive, which from my understanding is a very slow drive. Would this be the reason for the slow boot and can it be fixed with a replacement drive?

Hi @Lidsavr1,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with slow boot and overall sluggish performance of your HP Laptop 17 cn1053cl may be due to the 5400 RPM hard drive. While 5400 RPM hard drives are generally slower compared to their 7200 RPM counterparts or SSDs (Solid State Drives), they can still perform adequately for basic computing tasks. However, as the system ages and accumulates data, the performance degradation might become more noticeable.

Replacing the hard drive with a solid-state drive (SSD) can significantly improve the overall performance of your laptop. SSDs offer much faster read and write speeds compared to traditional hard drives, resulting in quicker boot times, faster application launches, and overall snappier system performance.

Here are the general steps to replace the hard drive with an SSD:

  • Backup Your Data: Before making any changes to your system, it's crucial to back up all your important data to an external storage device or cloud service.
  • Choose an SSD: Determine the capacity of the SSD you want to install based on your storage needs. SSDs come in various capacities ranging from 128GB to multiple terabytes.
  • Acquire Necessary Tools: You will need a screwdriver set that includes a Phillips head screwdriver to open your laptop's case.
  • Install the SSD: Follow these general steps to replace the hard drive with the SSD:

        a. Power off your laptop and disconnect it from any power source.

        b. Remove the back cover of your laptop by unscrewing the screws. Be cautious not to lose any screws.

        c. Locate the existing hard drive. It is usually a rectangular or square-shaped component.

        d. Unscrew any screws holding the hard drive in place and carefully remove it from its slot.

        e. Replace the hard drive with the SSD and secure it using the screws.

        f. Replace the back cover of the laptop and screw it back into place.

  • Reinstall the Operating System: You will need to reinstall Windows 11 or transfer your existing OS installation to the new SSD. your HP to reinstall the operating system. Software and Drivers for HP Laptop 17-cn1053cl
  • Restore Data: Once the operating system is installed, you can restore your backed-up data to the SSD.
