Hi,


I am considering purchasing the HP Laptop PC 15t-fd000 (13th-gen Intel Core i5-1334U / Raptor Lake), which will ship with Windows 11 preinstalled.


I want to install Ubuntu LTS on this machine. Before I commit, I need to verify the BIOS capabilities. 

 

  1. Does this model support Legacy Boot mode, or is it UEFI-only?
  2. If UEFI-only, does Ubuntu LTS install cleanly with UEFI enabled and Secure Boot disabled?
  3. Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu LTS (or any Linux distro) on this specific model?

The HP Laptop PC 15t-fd000 is designed for Windows 11, which requires UEFI firmware and a GPT partition scheme. As a result:

  • The notebook is UEFI-only.
  • Legacy Boot (CSM) is generally not available on this model.
  • The BIOS provides UEFI-related settings such as:
    • Secure Boot
    • Boot Order
    • USB Boot
    • TPM configuration
  1. If UEFI-only, does Ubuntu LTS install cleanly with UEFI enabled and Secure Boot disabled?

Yes. Ubuntu LTS supports UEFI installations and is designed to install on UEFI-based systems.

For the best installation experience:

  • Create the installation media in GPT/UEFI mode.
  • Boot the USB drive in UEFI mode.
  • If necessary, temporarily disable Secure Boot before installation. (Many recent Ubuntu LTS releases also support Secure Boot through a signed bootloader, but disabling it can simplify the installation if compatibility issues arise.)
  • Complete the installation using the default GPT partition layout.
