My cousin had passed away and left me their laptop and a few days other things, I found out their laptop was a work laptop but they’re closed down 🙂↕️😭

so I would love help with removing the previous profile on the account so I can use it. I’ve tried most methods but when trying to wipe the data? It asks for a recovery key? How do I remove the data without dealing with this? It’s a HP Zbook

Hi @Simpletondacook,

I'm sorry for your loss and also sending my condolences here.

The reason you are being asked for a recovery key is because the previous owner's work account likely used BitLocker or a similar encryption tool to protect all the data on the hard drive.

If you don't have the key, and since the company is closed, the simplest and most effective way to gain full control of the laptop and remove all traces of the previous profile is to perform a Clean Installation of Windows.

Warning: This process will permanently erase all data, files, and programs on the hard drive. Since the drive is encrypted and the recovery key is unavailable, accessing the existing data is not possible anyway. Moreover, please perform this task at your own personal risk.

Here is what you may try:

Step 1: Create a Windows Installation USB Drive

  1. Download and Run the Tool: On a working PC, download the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (or Client) from the Microsoft Store or HP website, then run it as administrator.
  2. Enter ZBook Info: On the welcome screen, select the option to "enter the Product ID / Serial Number for my HP system" and input the details from your ZBook. Click Next.
  3. Select USB Drive: Choose your blank 32 GB+ USB drive from the list, click Next, and confirm the data erasure warning.
  4. Download & Finish: The tool will download the factory recovery image and create the bootable media. Click Finish when the process is complete.

Step 2: Boot the ZBook from the USB Drive

  1. Insert the USB drive into the HP ZBook.
  2. Restart the ZBook.
  3. As the laptop starts up, immediately and repeatedly press the F9 key (or sometimes Esc then F9) to bring up the Boot Device Options Menu.
  4. From the list, select your USB drive (it might be listed as "UEFI: USBDriveName") and press Enter.

Step 3: Wipe the Encrypted Drive and Install Windows

Once the Windows Setup screen appears (asking for language and keyboard layout), follow these steps to bypass the recovery key prompt:

  1. Select your language, time, and keyboard layout, then click Next.
  2. Click "Install now."
  3. On the activation screen, click "I don't have a product key." (Your ZBook has the product key embedded in the BIOS, and Windows will automatically activate later).
  4. Select the edition of Windows (e.g., Windows 11 Pro) that was previously installed, if you know it, and click Next.
  5. Accept the license terms and click Next.
  6. Select "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)."
  7. Wipe the Drive: This is the critical step to remove the encryption.
    • You may see a list of partitions (Partition 1, Partition 2, etc.).
    • Select each partition one by one and click the "Delete" button until the entire drive is shown as a single section of "Unallocated Space."
    • Deleting the partitions wipes the drive clean, completely bypassing the BitLocker recovery key.
  8. Select the single block of Unallocated Space and click Next.
  9. Windows will now begin the installation process, automatically creating the necessary new partitions.

Once the installation is complete, the laptop will restart, and you can proceed with setting up your new user account, name, and personal settings, just like a brand-new computer.
