I have just came across an old HP Mini 1000 notebook (Windows XP) that works , but is old and slow, like me. Can it be upgraded to Windows 10 so that it can be used with today's software?? Or should I just pitch it???

You'd have to pay for W10 (at least $99), and there is a good chance that some of the hardware your notebook has would not work on W10 due to its age.
The HP Mini 1000 model series was not supported for W10 so there wouldn't be any drivers for it.
I would not gamble $100 on installing W10 as the odds are stacked against it working right.
