HP Notebook - 15-dw0037wm
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello all, I am hopping someone can help me figure out my issue. I have a 15-DW0037WM notebook and decided a little bit ago I was going to change the existing 5400 RPM drive out with SSD drive. I have installed the SSD and attempted to load Windows 10 on the laptop but after the initial setup runs when it reboots the laptop to complete the setup it will not boot to the hard drive. I have tried this a few times with three different brands of SSDs. I have tried a "SK hynix Gold S31 SATA Gen3 2.5 inch Internal SSD - 500GB" , "Kingston 480GB A400 SATA 3 2.5" Internal SSD SA400S37/480G" and a "SAMSUNG 870 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III ". All have the same results. I can however put the 1tb 5400 RPM drive back in the laptop and it will load windows just fine. I have even attempted to load MintLinux on the SSDs to see if maybe it was a windows 10 issue without luck.

Currently the laptop has the Kingston SSD installed in it. I am hopping I am just missing something simple

I have temped the following to try to get windows to load and boot. Each time I make a change I will deleted the partitions from the drive and attempt a fresh install of windows 10.

-Updated the laptop Bios

-Updated the drive firmware

-Cleared the TPM

-Disable Secure boot

-Clear all Secure boot keys

-Enable legacy support

Hi:

Have you tried the HP cloud recovery tool to create the bootable USB recovery drive that reinstalls W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with the notebook on the new SSD?

If not, you may want to give that a try, because I can't think of any reason why any model 2.5" SSD is not working.

You remove the 2.5" mechanical hard drive, install the SSD, install W10 on the SSD and enjoy the blazing fast performance.

Nothing else needs to be done.

Here is a link for how to use the HP cloud recovery tool...

Unfortunately that did not resolve the problem. The laptop defiantly sees the hard drive. It can see it in the bios. It sees it to start to load the OS but after it reboots to finish the load process it is coming back with the same error as before.

Why can't things just work as expected? ☹️

This should have been a simple operation, so I can certainly understand your frustration.

I am stumped too.

There is only one other thing I can think of for you to try.

Many years ago, I had a similar issue with an old Intel 530 SSD and my HP Elitebook 6930p.

What I did was as a last resort was to install the storage controller driver, even though Windows found the hard drive just fine without it.

After I installed the driver, I was shocked that on reboot, it worked.

So...I have zipped up and attached below, the storage controller drivers that should work with your PC's chipset.

You will only be able to do this with the clean installation, because I don't believe the cloud recovery tool drive allows you any options.

Download and unzip the drivers to their folder.  Copy the folder to a USB flash drive.

When you get to the part of the installation that asks 'Where do you want to install Windows,' select the Load driver option and browse to the driver folder on your USB flash drive.  If you check the box, it will only include the compatible driver.

Click Next, continue on with the installation, and cross your fingers.

That did not resolve the issue. Same issues as before.

I did do some more testing and swapped the SSD with a different 5400 rpm drive then what came with the laptop and was able to load windows just fine. The issue seems to be specific to SSD drives.

Sorry that didn't work either.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try.

I spoke with HP support today and was told upgrading the hard disk was not supported. They said I could pay for support to see if they could figure out the issue. My bet at this point is the laptop only supports specific SSDs. Which it would be great if HP offered up this information in the support documentation so people don't waste their time trying to figure out an issue that cant be fixed without buying a SSD that's on HP's proprietary list for the laptop. I did find in digging that the following SSD's might have come with different configurations of this laptop. I think I am going to order one to see if it works. Over all I am very disappointed that as a customer I cant get a strait answer about something that should be public knowledge with out having to pay for support. Hard drive changes and component replacements are common. If this laptop will only work with specific hardware this should be in the support documentation provided to the consumers of the product to ensure they can make good educated decisions regarding the long term use and maintenance of the product.

When looking at the support page for this laptop is see firmware listed for the following types of SSD drives. My assumption is only these will work with the laptop. I am thinking I am going to order one to confirm.

-Intel Teton Glacier Solid State

-Micron 1100 Non-SED
