HP Notebook - 17-ak061nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

At first it wouldnt install windows 10 updates that require a reboot to install and would keep saying needs to reboot to install.

So I decided to install windows 10 fresh since using the img on hard drive wasnt fixing the issue.

When I restart and press esc and select the usb drive with windows 10 on it the laptop will either reboot over and over again or it will sit on the hp logo forever.  I have even tried to disable secure boot which didnt help either.  So I figured I could take out the drive and put it in another computer and start the install and then finish it in the laptop.  I couldnt have been more wrong since now it either reboots over and over or sits on hp logog forever.

I have also burned windows 10 to a disc and get the same problem when trying to boot from the disc.  Here is the funny part is when I put in the windows 8 dvd that will start the install process without an issue but when I try to put the windows 10 disc in then it either reboots or hangs on hp logo.

I am all out of ideas so any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi:

First see if this works...Your notebook is supported by the HP cloud recovery tool.

Use the HP cloud recovery tool that will create a bootable USB recovery drive that you can use to reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your PC.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility.

You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive and you will need to use another Windows PC running W7 64 bit or newer to use the cloud recovery tool on.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

If that doesn't work, since you seem to be able to install W8 with no problem, install it and then click on the blue update now button to upgrade to W10 and see if that works.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

If you have activation issues after W10 has completed installing, change the installed product key to the W10 OEM product key in your notebook's BIOS.

Install the Showkey plus app from the Microsoft Store to see your notebook's W10 OEM product key.

Hi and thanks for your reply

I think the hp cloud is working since it says it installed windows and is now installing the software so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Hopefully if this works it also fixes the windows update that requires a restart to finish installing it that didnt work before since it wouldnt run it on startup.

If this works I will mark this as accepted solution

That did it, thanks again.

Now I need to post another question about why it wont install windows update version 20h2 on reboot and also the bios will noy update whether i run it in windows or make a boot usb drive and run it on startup

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with why the BIOS won't update, but I suggest you see if you can skip right to the latest build of W10 (21H2), by clicking on the blue Update Now button at the link below.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
