HP Pavilion 14-n215tx Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I upgraded my HDD to an SSD (same capacity - 500gb) via cloning, but I didn't include the recovery partition. When I replaced the hard drive, I put the old one in an enclosure so I can still use it as backup. However, in a stupid move (I didn't really know what I was doing), I tried to create another recovery in the backup drive, which formatted the drive and removed the original recovery partition. Now I don't know what to do to get a recovery backup disc in case of future problems... My laptop came with Windows 8.1 single language pre-installed, which I then upgraded to Windows 10  single language. I downloaded the Windows 10 iso, the Windows 10 single language iso, and the Windows 8.1 single language iso. Which one should I use if I want to refresh my system and keep my files?

Thanks!

Jon

Hi Jon,

You should use the Windows 10 iso. If you want to keep your files you can run the iso from within Windows and it will give you the option to keep files and apps.

You can also refresh Windows 10 without using the iso from within the OS

You can also use the iso to perform a clean install of Windows 10 if necessary. You do not need a product key (Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to Internet.

There are many ways to create a backup image of the system, either through Windows or using application such as Macrium reflect or similar.

Hope it helps,

David
