Hello, recently I purchased a HP Pavilion 15-cs2013ca. This unit has an i7-8565U, 12gb memory, 500gb SSD and Nvidia MX250. The unit is very fast when plugged in, to be expected, however as soon as it's unplugged it slows to a crawl. It's bad enough that some applications just refuse to open when it's running on battery. I have tried the usual, changing battery plan settings and such with no luck. i tried the default high performance plan as well as creating a custom plan with no difference. The bios has pretty much no options at all. I tried switching the default graphics to the Nvidia one, which also didn't help.
Is this a known issue with the laptop? Is there a firmware update or something that fixes this? The laptop is unbearable to use even for internet browsing when it's not plugged in. I'm sure it's some sort of trickery that's programmed in to get the advertised long battery life, but I'd like to have a usable laptop while it's running on the battery.

I would guess that you know your computer and how you like to use it, that is, your favorite software, various "ready" options, tools to accomplish tasks (from FaceBook to checking your stocks).
The following suggestions are just that, suggestions on places to look to help you find a possible solution.
Left to itself, Windows will run the Tiles in your Start Screen in "Live" mode.
Great if your Internet connection is perfect and you are connected to AC power.
Not great if your Internet is slow and / or you are running on battery.
Start Screen (Windows key) > Right-Click on a Tile (icon)
If the Tile is "Live", switch it OFF
Check the programs in Startup.
Everything is likely OK; if there is something in the list that you do not need started (until you use it), remove that software from the list
Right-Click on Taskbar > Task Manager > Startup
