I just purchased the new HP pavilion 15 eg2073cl from costco yesterday (i7-1255u 1.70 GHz, Intel Iris Xe graphics, 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, 41 Whr battery), and have noticed that it gets fairly hot just doing routine things like watching youtube (with headphones in), or even just idling on the desktop, even when it is on a flat tabletop. In addition, they advertise the battery life as 7.5 hours, but from testing it thus far, I am barely able to get 4 hours just doing the same tasks as above. Does anyone have the same problem or know of a fix? Like I said, the computer is literally brand new, and a battery test in HP support assistant indicates everything is working as it should.

There is a vent screen under your laptop, at least on my Pavilion15t eg000, i5.  I prop up the back of my Pavilion with a DVD empty case, to allow air flow/cooling.  Been doing this for years for any laptop.  My laptop is in use for at least a steady 6+ hours a day, 7 days a week, and is a month+ old.   Hope this helps for your heat issue, which might affect the battery.
