Machine: HP Pavilion 15-n048ca Notebook
Product Number: E9G69UA#ABL
S/N: (removed content)
OS: Windows 8 64 bit
Issue:
My kid accidentally hit the power button and it somehow damaged the original hard dirve so I had to replace it with a new one. I've installed a new Seagate Firecuda 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA 6Gb/s 128 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive (ST1000LX015), and ordered Windows 8 64bit Recovery USB media from HP. I Followed the exact instruction included however after allt the installation files are completed, it gives a message saying "The recovery attempt has failed. Select one of the following buttons: Save Log, Details, Retry. I've reinserted the USB recovery media and repeated the process several times - still the same error.
I read on other thread that it could be due to the new HDD, I've seen a thing called Cyberlink Recovery Utility which worksfor Window7 creating a bootable CD on other threads, just wondering if there's such version for Windows 8 64 bit? Or if anyone could shed some light on this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've spent close to $200 for the new HDD and Recovery USB media from HP but it's completely useless!

Thanks, I appreciate the detailed solution, I really do.
Apparently your method didn't resolve the issue, however another thread on this forum mentioned that changing the BIOS date to 2012 - which actually worked!!! Thanks to whoever came up with that weird solution, hadn't I checked out all the threads on this forum I would never know about it, and I would waste the $200 + I spent on my new HDD and Recovery USB drive - so kudos to the kickass users here!
HP needs to do a better job to make the recovery process much simpler just my 2 cents.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.
I understand that the original hard drive on your HP Pavilion 15-n048ca Notebook got damaged as your kid powered it off unexpectedly. Kids! it happens to the best of us. 😉
You replaced it with a new Seagate Firecuda 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA 6Gb/s 128 MB Cache. I read that you initiated a system recovery using the USB media from HP. The recovery finishes till the end and it gives a message saying "The recovery attempt has failed. Select one of the following buttons: Save Log, Details, Retry. Not to worry, I'll do my best to help you.
I suggest you remove any external devices connected to the laptop like a USB flash drive (not the recovery flash drive), printer, etc. Keep only the charger and the battery connected to the laptop.
Next step would be to display the secure boot on from the BIOS: (Source: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226)
- Disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Boot.
-
Turn the computer off completely.
-
Turn on the computer by pressing the Power button and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens.
-
When the Startup Menu appears, press F10 to select BIOS Setup.
Figure : Startup Menu
- Use the right arrow key to choose the System Configuration menu, use the down arrow key to select Boot Options, and then press Enter.
Figure : Boot Options selection in the System Configuration window
- Use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot, press Enter, then use the down arrow key to modify the setting to Disabled, press Enter.
Figure : Secure Boot
- Use the up and down arrow keys to select Legacy Support, press Enter to change the setting to Enable and press Enter again.
Figure : Legacy Support
- Use the left and right arrow keys to select Yes on the confirmation window and press Enter to enable Legacy Support.
Figure : Confirmation window
- Use the down arrow key to select a device in the Legacy Boot Order menu, and press F5 and F6 to move the device down or up.
Figure : Legacy Boot Order
-
Press F10 to accept the changes and use the left arrow key to select Yes and press Enter to Exit Saving Changes.
-
As soon as the computer starts, a message may appear indicating that the boot mode has changed, if so, type the four-digit code shown in the message, then press Enter to confirm the change. Otherwise, continue with the next step.

NOTE: Make sure you type the code correctly, since there is no text field to see what you are typing. This is expected behavior. When you type the numbers, the code is logged without a text field.
Post the above steps you may try to initiate the recovery again. I hope this helps. Please feel free to let me know how it goes. Good luck!
