Pavilion dv6
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a Pavilion DV6 that had a hard drive failure, I got a new SSD (Samsong 860 EVO 500GB) but can not seem to get windows reinstalled.

I made a USB boot disk and put ISO file on DVD, both still showed "no boot drive available".

I ran the hard disk test on the Pavilion and my desktop, on both it passed.

What am I missing and what else do I need to do to get Windows installed on the new hard drive?

Thank you

I don't think I have the windows 7 CD.

Anyway I got it to work, I formatted the new hard drive and then tried the boot drive on my desktop with the new SSD installed on that.  After the computer went into it's first reboot I took the SSD and put it into the laptop and it finished installing.  The laptop is up and working, including the USB ports.

Thank you for your help!!

Hello, you don't need to copy the ISO file on your USB key but use a tool for create the USB key (it will be erased).

If your PC works on Windows 10 you can use the tool on the Microsoft site for directly create a USB key:

Download Windows 10 - microsoft.com

If Windows 8, 7 or later, you can use this tool with your ISO file:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

Thank you for your help, this is what I have done. . I start it, select "Create installation media for another PC", I select 64-bit architecture ( I think that is what I had on my previous hard drive, but maybe it was 32).  It has two options, make a USB and make an ISO to burn to a DVD.  I tried both ways and get the same result, neither seem to work.

I have played with the boot order and put different options first.

Notebook harddrive, internal CD/DVD ROM, USB diskette on Key/USB hard disk, USB CD/DVD, and USB Floppy.

Is there a specific order I should put them in?

I feel like I have tried most combination of things and still get "No bootable device" every time.  Does it matter which USB port I stick the flash drive into? Should I be using the 32 bit since it is an older computer?  Is there something else I am missing?

Hello, when you have created the USB key, you just need to enter F9 at boot to go to your boot menu (when your USB stick is in your PC). Do you have your key in the boot order??

And can your key work in an other PC??

The advice from @Fanordi  is actually your best approach, as the HP DV6s will generally boot from USB, and installing Windows from a USB is faster, and more dependable, than trying to install it from a DVD.

Additionally, you won't run into capacity issues as long as you use a USB stick of at least 8GB.  DVDs, however, are limited to 4.3GB and some of the Win10 ISOs, especially those that include Home and Pro, are too large to fit on a DVD.

That gave us some new data.  When I hit the F9 on start up the USB does not appear in the list of boot options.  I verified through the F10 menu that it is in the list.  I assume the USB (it's a 36GB drive) is not being recognized, I tried using the USB in each of the 3 USB Ports (twice each).  Any thoughts on fixing that?

Hello, do you have tested this key on an other computer??
