I've had this laptop brand new for 2 days now and is getting incredibly hot after a few minutes of being turned on. There us no way this can be clogged up vents because I only use it sat at my desk and it is turned off when I'm not using. Surely this isn't normal for a brand new laptop?!

Actually, yes -- it is!

The new laptops have processors that are a lot more powerful than the older laptops, they have thinner cases, and they have smaller fans -- all of which add up to more heat.  Additionally, some of them come with the newer NVME SSDs -- which get a LOT hotter than the older SATA SSDs and SATA HDDs, so much so that NVME SSD add-on cards usually come with add-on heat sinks.
