I have a HP Pavilion laptop. I purchased it back in 2023 before going to college. In the past week I have had some issues with it. First of all, a few days ago, I got an alert saying that the battery installed was not an HP Battery. However, I have never messed with this battery. Since then, I haven't got that message again. Next, when I go to plug in my laptop with the charger it came with, I get an alert saying "Low-power source detected" and that it will run in reduced performance mode. It also says I should use the approved AC adapter. Then this morning when I tried to get on my laptop after a night of charging, it had to restart. It then said it needed to fix something, and when that fix failed I was given the option to contiue to the computer or turn it off. Just now when getting on it after a couple hours of charging, it also had to restart and once it restarted, it did it again and again until I unplugged my laptop from the charger.

Has this happened to anyone? Do I need a new battery? A new charger? I ran the battery test and it says it's a good battery. Any help would be great.

@Drewrocks406,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

OK, since the battery test reports the battery as healthy, I would focus first on the AC adapter and charging system. The "Low-power source detected" message suggests to me that the laptop is not properly recognizing the charger or is not receiving the expected power. Because the restart loop occurred whilst the charger was connected and stopped when it was unplugged, a failing charger, damaged charging cable, charging port issue, or motherboard charging circuit fault is more likely than a bad battery.

So, if possible, test with a known-good genuine HP charger of the correct wattage and run the HP UEFI diagnostics (F2 at startup) to check for adapter-related errors. If the warning persists with another charger, the laptop may require hardware service for the charging port or motherboard.

If you can provide the exact HP Pavilion model number and the wattage printed on the charger label, the troubleshooting can be narrowed down further.

Kind Regards,
