Pavilion DV7
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

OK, I decided to register, read and write my first post using my own laptop as labrat.

But first... a little about me:

I am a man that considers himself to be at least average intelligence with experience of 8 years as an electronics technician, diagnosing and repairing PCBs from a variety of consumer products. I also spend time working on the android operating system where i find security flaws, loopholes and bugs in Googles 'Factory Reset Protection' features. Submitting my findings to Google inevitably gives me more future attempts at breaking the software and a strong hobby when the lady is watching the soaps.

Now for the laptop issues...

With my DV7 purchased for £40 GBP and suffering the usual power, lights, fans but no POST or boot, it quickly bounced into life after a quick stretch in the reflow station undergoing a repair to the solderless pins on the AMD GPU.

Somehow the windows 7 onboard was unusable, so a fresh attempt at a WIN10 install was needed to bring the tech as up-to-date as i could. After a home edition was installed and a direct upgrade to PRO via microsoft, BIG PROBLEMS were found, so i went about rooting out some conflicts.

These problems have been experienced by many people over the internet and 99.9% are clueless to a fix.

SO MY FIRST POST IS TO START A COLLECTION OF WORKING DRIVERS FOR HPs DV7 with WINDOWS 10 64Bit to help others obtain a fully working laptop. HP host standard WinVista and Win7 drivers but some are likely to show as incompatible, even using the compatibility wizard to install under earlier OS conditions, notably the Graphics utilities and drivers.

The problems likely to be experienced are in order of importance:

HP Bios was an old revision, so an update was found (useful to amend Function key priority and using Battery and Power testing outside OS.

AMD HD5000 and HD4200(for VGA) graphics drivers not compatible with WIN10, maybe! Somebody please confirm this!

(I say maybe because the GPU repair may not have been a total success afterall)

I am yet to find the conflicts, the HD5000 driver will not start and the HD4200 driver will not install a compatible driver for WIN10. Screen brightness and calibration cannot be accessed either. AMD Catalyst doesnt detect a driver and the newest AMD Beta Crimson does not help and causes sytem instability. AMD/ATi Drivers removed again using DDU for windows.

**For now I use the Standard Microsoft Display driver and bump the Resolution beyond the recommended settings without issue. I also set my screen to sleep after 1 min when running on battery as 100% brightness is not an efficient way of conserving power or the lifespan of the power supply. I will post new AMD Driver below once issues are fixed.

ATI High Definition Sound driver installed via the compatibility in WIN7 mode.

Unfortunately the quality of the sound output was seriously diminished so advice would be to use the Standard Microsoft HD Audio Device driver, unfortunately this means that the headphone jack can only output stereo, where i need a digital signal for DTS capabilties. The HDMI port is enabled for sound, as i can see the output in the Playback Device Properties, but sound cannot work through the HDMI port due to the graphics driver problems above. DOLBY PRO LOGIC IT IS THEN!!!FOR NOW!!! Again i wil post a suitable ATi driver when patch is completed.

The Fingerprint sensor WIN7 driver installed via compatibility WIN7 mode and works correctly, confirmed by the HP Simplepass protection and log-in feature, also a WIN7 version. However, WIN10 doesnt like you logging in using HPs own software, so using WINDOWS HELLO is a great way to work around this. Any HP fingerprint software needs to be installed first, then manually rolled back to Standard driver found through windows online search function if on WIN10 Home.

The Fucntion keys work with HPs WIN7 drivers, however I find that the LEDs for mute and wifi signal do not operate in the correct manner. I shall be looking at a fix for this soon, but its a lesser priority than other issues.

Bluetooth and Wifi work with WIN7 drivers installed with ADMINISTRATOR privelidges. Both work flawlessly.

The Hard drive operation needs a fix as it struggles to enter power save mode, even with Virtual memory and System Restore disabled. I may need to create a UEFI drive to avoid having too many logical drives connected to windows at once, but i cant see how FASTboot helps enter recovery if windows decides to catastrophically fail on me.

E-Sata, Ethernet and USB drivers for WIN7 should be installed via compatibility wizard. All work correctly and enter suspend mode with wake command on USB working.

And these are what i have found just today. I shall be working through some conflicts over the remainder of the weekend i will post the results and more importantly REFERENCE all working methods below....

If you have a DV7 running WIN10, please join in

Thanks everyone, read on soon!

Did you end up writing a collection of Drivers for the DV&  running Windows 10? I really need a bluetooth driver for the DV7-4120TX every other aspect of the machine seems to work under Windows 10 except for Bluetooth.
