I have two HP Pavillion dv5000 laptops as well as two desktops. About three years ago one of the laptops stopped working. It would power up and all the blue LEDs would light up then it would shut down. I followed all the forums suggestions. I swapped out RAM with the working laptop (10 years old and going fine), swapped Hard drives, removed CMOS battery and on and on. Finally put it on the shelf to be cannabalized for parts. Pulled out today and nothing woks, even after trying all the forum suggestions. I pulled out the optical drive and tried turning it on. It started, showed the splash screen and the option to enter setup or change the boot order, then it died. So screen works, BIOS seems to work but doesn't start POST. I thought about resetting the BIOS and tried the keystroke option but that didn't work. Thought about using a USB stick to reset the BIOS but this model is no longer supported :(. An interesting side note. I pulled the memory and tried to start it. Received one beep, three beeps, three beeps, the dead. I know its old but it has become a challenge and like to see if it can be revived. Thanks

@larriemac Welcome to HP Community!
I appreciate your efforts of reviving this ancient device, however, since its beyond obsolete, there's limited support available and the only thing I can suggest at this point is to click here for details on understanding what the beep codes represent, apart from that I'm afraid there's nothing else we can do about this, its better to get an upgrade than spend more time on reviving it in my opinion.
I hope that answers your query,

Just an update. As you might guess I am stubborn and kept playing with it. i removed the CMos battery and both drives and the wireless card and tried to start it. Now, it turns on and stays on, takes a charge but no video. I replaced each item and retested it and it stays on and appears to try booting, At least there is drive activity :). But no video. Replacing CMos battery seems to kill it. Earlier I had a splash screen so I think the screen is good. The closest error code (one beep,three beeps, three beep)s implied a video card problem. Connected to an external monitor and nothing. Time to cannabalize it. No need to reply, you can mark as resolved. Just wanted to update all. There may be something there for others to try.
