I am having an issue with slow running laptop. I have tried running the performance thing but it wont let me it downloads fine but then comes back with error. My son added memory but that isn't doing anything. I have it on battery saving, run CCLeaner, but I cannot get anything to find out why its so slow. Anyone have any ideas on what I can try. Can't afford to take it in to a computer place.
Thanks!

Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
1. Check for Malware or Unwanted Software
- Run a full system scan with Windows Defender or another trusted antivirus program to make sure your laptop isn't infected with malware.
- Uninstall unnecessary software:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & Features and uninstall any programs you don't use or recognize.
2. Check Startup Programs
- Right-click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager.
- Go to the Startup tab.
- Disable any programs that don't need to run at startup by selecting them and clicking Disable (but be careful not to disable important programs like antivirus or system services).
3. Check Your Hard Drive Health
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator:
- Press Windows key + X and select Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Type: chkdsk /f and press Enter.
- If prompted, type Y and restart the laptop to allow the system to check and fix any errors on the disk.
If your laptop has a Solid-State Drive (SSD), this should already be faster, but you can check the drive's health using third-party tools like CrystalDiskInfo.
4. Check Memory Usage
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Click on the Performance tab.
- Check the Memory section to see if all the RAM is recognized and whether it's being used efficiently.
5. Disk Cleanup
Perform a Disk Cleanup to free up space and remove temporary files:
- Press the Windows key and type Disk Cleanup.
- Select the Disk Cleanup app.
- Choose your system drive (usually C:) and click OK.
- Check all options, especially Temporary files, and click OK to delete them.
6. Update Drivers and Windows
- Update Windows:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
- Update Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (right-click the Start button and select Device Manager).
- Right-click on Display adapters and Network adapters and click Update driver to make sure your graphics and network drivers are current.
- You can also visit the HP Support website and enter your laptop’s model to check for any new drivers or BIOS updates.
7. Check for Disk Fragmentation (if using an HDD)
- Press the Windows key, type Defragment, and select Defragment and Optimize Drives.
- Select your C: drive and click Optimize.
8. Adjust Power Settings
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Under Related settings, click on Additional power settings.
- Select High performance or Balanced mode (depending on your preference).
9. Perform a System Reset (if needed)
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, select Get Started.
- Choose either Keep my files (to preserve personal files but remove apps and settings) or Remove everything (for a complete reset).
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
