Hi. I am trying to install a new BIOS (.bin file) to a laptop that will not boot. It is a HP Probook 11 G1, Product N5P28US#ABA. The HP Download for the Product Number gives me a .bin file that is just 6144 KB and will not install. The one that was installed (and may be corrupted) is 8192 KB. Does someone have a BIOS that is the right size? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Paul

Hi @pwal2
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I understand you're trying to recover your HP ProBook that is currently not booting, and you've noticed a difference between the BIOS file size available from HP and the BIOS image that was previously installed. Dont worry I'll be glad to help you with this.
To better understand the situation, could you kindly confirm the below details :
- What exactly happened before the system stopped booting? Was there a BIOS update, power interruption, or hardware change?
- When you power on the notebook, do you see any LEDs blinking, hear fan activity, or receive any beep codes?
- Are you attempting a BIOS recovery using a USB drive?
- Does the screen remain completely blank, or do you see any HP logo or error message?
In the meantime, kindly try these below steps and confirm :
1: Attempt HP BIOS Recovery - Click here for steps
- Turn off the notebook.
- Connect the AC adapter.
- Press and hold the Windows Key + B keys.
- While holding these keys, press and hold the Power button for 2 to 3 seconds and then release the Power button while continuing to hold Windows + B.
- Release the keys when the BIOS recovery screen appears or after you hear beeps.
2: Create a BIOS Recovery USB
If another Windows PC is available:
- Download the latest BIOS for your exact model from HP Support.
- Run the BIOS package and select Create Recovery USB Flash Drive if the option is available.
- Use the recovery USB to attempt BIOS restoration on the affected notebook.
Kindly refer to the following HP documents for detailed guidance: HP PCs - Recovering the BIOS: video reference link click here
The difference in BIOS file size does not necessarily indicate that the downloaded BIOS is incorrect or incomplete. BIOS packages can vary in size between revisions because HP may change the firmware structure, compression method, embedded modules, security updates, or recovery components. The more important factor is whether the BIOS package matches the exact model and product number of your notebook.
I hope this helps.

Hi. Thanks so much for the reply. Sorry to be late in my response.
To answer your question, I don't know what happened before it stopped booting. I am a volunteer fixing up old computers for a local charity where we are given older laptops and then pass them on to those who cannot afford one.
When plugged in, the laptop constantly flashes both the red charging light and the white power button light. However, there is no power being drawn by the computer. All the voltages seem to be in place, so I am hoping that the BIOS is just badly corruted and that it is not even starting a boot.
I have tried the suggestions you made, but it just ignores all solutions.
As I said earlier, the BIOS supplied by HP in the download is just 6144KB, while the one installed on the PC is 8192KB.
I was hoping that someone out there had a full |BIOS for this machine, but have not yet found one. I may have to resort to cobbling one together fromn the old and new ones.
Thanks again
Paul

Hi @pwal2,
Thank you for the update, and I appreciate the work you’re doing to help your local community.
For the HP ProBook 11 G1, product line N5P28US, running Windows 10 (64-bit), the latest BIOS listed on the HP support website https://support.hp.com/ is:
HP Notebook System BIOS Update
- Version: 01.17 Rev.A
- Release date: September 19, 2019
- Download size: 10.2 MB
- Download BIOS from HP
Kindly try the below and confirm :
- Download and run the HP BIOS package on another Windows PC.
- If offered, select Create Recovery USB Flash Drive.
- Connect the recovery USB and AC adapter to the ProBook.
- Hold Windows + B, press the Power button for 2–3 seconds, then release Power while continuing to hold Windows + B.
- Allow the BIOS recovery process to start if detected.
I would not recommend manually combining the 6144 KB and 8192 KB BIOS images, as an incorrect firmware image could cause further damage.
If BIOS Recovery is still not detected and the notebook continues flashing without starting, an HP-authorized service center inspection would be the safest next step.
