HP Stream 14
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

I have a HP Stream laptop 14" running windows 8.1 and have need to increase disk space to install latest updates I need to download totalling 740MB.  I apparently have only 40MB available.

I rarely use the laptop, it's a reserve for my desktop, I update it every so often. So I am surprised that I get disk low messages.  I have run disk cleanup but savings are negligible.  I've checked the big saving areas such as restore (which isn't used apparently), hiberfil.sys (which isn't set up).  I was hoping for advice where to look to substantially gain disk space .

I was also wondering if this is a common problem with HP stream, as this is the first time I've ever experienced running out of disk space.  I've had desktops and laptops and this is a first.

Hope somebody can suggest things to do, and if there is any software/tools to map disk usage.

Thank you

Unfortunately, yes -- it is a common problem as the Streams only have 32GB of "disk" storage and that can not be expanded.

Here are some things you can do to recover some of the disk space:

Also, the community Win10 Forums has the following suggestions:

In addition, I have found the utility Cleanmgr+ to have LOTS of options for removing Windows junk, including log files. I use it practically every day. You can get it from here:

Also, there is a freeware app known as Wise Disk Cleaner. I use it every day to get rid of junk files: https://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-disk-cleaner.html

Thank you for your information.  It was very useful, although it is mostly for Windows 10.

It the intervening period I had found the magic button in the Disk Cleanup popup display 'Cleanup System Files'.  Made all the difference and identified over 5GB of 'windows update cleanup'.  It took the HP Stream 5 hours to create workable disk space.

I'm very disappointed with the HP Stream, how did it manage to hold on to so much disk space unnecessarily.  I also have an ASUS X205 bought at the same time in 2017 that also is limited to 32GB but does not have the same problem and still has 7GB of free disk space.

I'll spend more time at a later date to find further disk space savings, but for now I have workable system.
