I was trying to factory reset my laptop before giving it to a friend. I updated it a few weeks back and never got around to the factory reset. I got on today, and it said my pin was incorrect. I tried every thing it could’ve been before resetting. I received the email, put in the pin from that, and then attempted to change my PIN code that way. I did not have any luck and was presented with an error message. I did research and made sure my WiFi was on. I then seen I could factory reset from the Lock Screen. I tried to do that, and it’s now telling me my Microsoft email password is incorrect. I knew it wasn’t, but I changed it anyway. Still no luck getting it to work. I cannot do any of the advanced settings due to it saying my Microsoft email password is incorrect.
would my next step be to order a USB recovery device? I’d like to avoid paying if possible as I am gifting this laptop. Thank you!

@Smccoy11, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Stream password!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand how frustrating it can be to reset your device, especially when encountering login issues. Let’s try a few steps to resolve this without needing a recovery USB.
Verify Your Internet Connection
Since your device relies on an internet connection to validate Microsoft credentials, please ensure that:
- Your Wi-Fi is connected before attempting to sign in.
- If using a wired connection, try switching to Wi-Fi instead.
- Restart your router and attempt the login again.
Reset Your Microsoft Account Password
Since the system is rejecting your Microsoft account password:
- Visit Microsoft’s Password Reset Page from another device.
- Follow the steps to reset your password.
- Try logging into your laptop again using the new credentials.
Reset the PC from the Lock Screen
If you still cannot sign in, you may attempt a factory reset directly from the lock screen:
- On the sign-in screen, press and hold the Shift key while selecting Restart from the power options in the bottom right corner.
- Once the PC restarts, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose Remove Everything and follow the on-screen instructions.
Let me know if this works!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
