Hello,
I have an error related to HP System Event Utility Background every time I restart the laptop or try to open the App. I have been navigating throughout this forum and trying various proposed solutions (update operating system, look for missing drivers, use "scannow" in command prompt, looking for corrupted files in Malwarebytes) without success.
The error message is "The instruction at 0x00007FFD97842882 referenced memory at 0x0...0. The memory could not be read."
Sometimes I also have a problem with the driver related to WiFi, I am not sure it is related but at least WiFi is working now.
Anyone can help? Thank you

Hi @gfoucault,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're encountering two separate issues: one related to the HP System Event Utility and the other to your WiFi driver. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps that might help resolve these issues:
Please try the following Troubleshoots steps.
1. Turn off the Unit.
2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
3. Remove any discs from the disc drive.
4. Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.
5. Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.
6. Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.
7. Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.
Step 2
Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit
Step3
The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit
Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.
1. HP System Event Utility Error
The error message you’re seeing, “The instruction at 0x00007FFD97842882 referenced memory at 0x0...0. The memory could not be read,” suggests a memory issue or a problem with the utility itself. Here's what you can try:
a. Reinstall the HP System Event Utility:
- Go to the HP Support Website.
- Search for your specific laptop model (HP Pavilion 15-cs2005ns) and download the latest version of the HP System Event Utility.
- Uninstall the current version from your Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart the laptop and then install the freshly downloaded version.
b. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers:
- Sometimes, errors related to memory can be linked to outdated BIOS or chipset drivers.
- Go to the HP Support Website and download the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your model.
- Install them and restart your computer.
c. Check for Corrupt System Files:
Since you've already used sfc /scannow, you can try using DISM (Deployment Imaging Service and Management Tool) to fix potential system image issues:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run the following command: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- After it finishes, restart your computer.
2. WiFi Driver Issues
Although WiFi seems to be working now, the underlying driver issue may still be causing instability. Here’s what you can do:
a. Update or Reinstall the WiFi Driver:
- Go to Device Manager (Right-click Start > Device Manager).
- Find the Network adapters section, expand it, and right-click on your WiFi adapter.
- Choose Update Driver and select Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If that doesn’t help, visit the HP Support Website or the manufacturer of your WiFi adapter’s website to download the latest driver.
b. Reset Network Settings:
Sometimes, resetting the network stack can resolve WiFi-related issues:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each one:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
- Restart your laptop.
3. Additional Steps for General Stability:
- Check for Malware or Corruption: Although you've run Malwarebytes, it’s worth doing a deeper scan with Windows Defender or another antivirus tool to ensure nothing malicious is affecting your system.
- Memory Test: To rule out memory issues, you can run the Windows Memory Diagnostic:
- Type “Windows Memory Diagnostic” in the Start menu.
- Select Restart now and check for problems.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
