Hi everyone,

I am facing a frustrating boot issue with my HP Victus and could use some advice from the community or HP experts before taking it in for a warranty claim.

Laptop Model: Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop 15-fa2000 (Product Number: A8VX7AV)

Age: 9 months old (Still under active warranty)

The Issue:

When I boot up the laptop, it occasionally throws a blue screen with the following error:

"The CMOS checksum is invalid. The CMOS will reset to the default configuration... CMOS Reset (502)"

After I press Enter to restart, Windows triggers the BitLocker recovery screen, requiring my 48-digit recovery key because the Secure Boot policy unexpectedly changed due to the CMOS reset.

Key Observations & Troubleshooting:

  1. I have access to Windows: I successfully entered my BitLocker key and have temporarily suspended BitLocker protection so I can keep using the laptop for work without getting locked out every morning.

  2. The Date and Time are PERFECT: Despite the CMOS 502 error, my Windows clock and calendar never reset. They are perfectly accurate the moment the laptop boots.

  3. No Coin-Cell Battery: I am aware that this specific Victus model does not have a separate CR2032 CMOS battery on the motherboard and relies entirely on the main laptop battery to hold BIOS settings.

  4. Main Battery is Healthy: The main battery holds a charge perfectly fine, and the laptop never randomly shuts down while I am using it on battery power.

My Questions:

Since the system time is not resetting and the main battery is completely healthy, I suspect this is not an actual power failure.

  • Is this a known BIOS/firmware bug for the Victus 15-fa2000 series?

  • Could this be caused by a slightly loose internal battery cable dropping the connection for a micro-second during boot?

  • Should I attempt a BIOS update, or should I take this straight to an authorized HP service center since the device is still under warranty? I have not opened the back panel to avoid voiding the warranty.

Any insights or recommended fixes would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Please run the F2 memory test.

Check the date an time in the bios, not windows.  Windows can set the correct date and time when it connects to Wi-Fi

There are several bios updates available here

Lookup your baseboard version using msinfo32.exe and download the bios that matches your baseboard ID.

lf the BIOS does not help or no newer bios available then return it for service.  You might want to make a copy of important files or request that the original drive be used if support just replaces the laptop.
