Hello, I have an HP k288uz notebook
it starts but the screen remains dark, the hard drive has been removed, the Caps lock key flashes white 3 times, pauses and repeats itself endlessly?
What can I do and what does the error code indicate?

@mablu, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding a black screen issue!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The Caps Lock LED blinking three times repeatedly on your HP ENVY Notebook - 17-k288nz typically indicates a memory (RAM) module failure. Since you've already removed the hard drive, we can rule out storage issues. Here’s what you can do to troubleshoot:
Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
- Reconnect only the power adapter (leave the battery out for now) and try turning it on.
If the issue persists, move to the next step.
Reseat or Replace RAM
- Turn off the laptop and unplug it.
- Remove the back panel to access the RAM sticks.
- Carefully remove both RAM sticks, clean the gold contacts with an eraser or microfiber cloth, and reseat them properly.
- If you have two RAM sticks, try booting with only one RAM stick at a time in different slots.
If your laptop starts with one of the RAM sticks, the other one may be faulty and needs replacement.
External Display Test
Try connecting your laptop to an external monitor via HDMI or VGA. If the external display works, the issue might be with the laptop’s screen or display cables.
Let me know if you need further assistance! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!
